Simplest replacement/upgrade for head unit?

I recently learned that the GPS app (Scout GPS) is end-of-life soon. Yes, it's absolutely awful, so I'm not shedding any tears about that. However, I do want to explore other ways to add supported navigation to the vehicle.

What I have was the standard system for the 2017 SR5, so no JBL. Is there another model (head unit, not Tacoma) that will plug right in, or easily (via an available wiring harness, not soldering or crimping wires)? All I really want out of it is AM/FM/HD radio, plus Android Auto (to use Google maps navigation). I don't play CDs, but do have a ton of music on a couple flash drives.

I've looked briefly at aftermarket options, but not sure if they'll retain the factory controls (via the steering wheel) and inputs (the USB port where I plug in the flash drives).

 

Trail Grid Pro would be your best bet for ease of install. Stinger looks more factory but is outdated. Everyone keeps mentioning the Pioneer 6600 but there is work to do if you install that radio.

I went with Joying head unit 2 years ago. Plug and play harness
Steering wheel controls, usb, lights all work.
But there other brands for more $$$

What head unit is presently installed. If it's Etune Premium Head non-JBL and original speakers keep in mind the OEM speakers are junk. If you are looking to improve sound you'll definitely need to upgrade the speakers. I am still using Premium non-JBL and upgraded my speakers. It made a world of difference. Speaker upgrade is much cheaper and you'll need them for decent sound regardless of the head unit.

Curious why an upgrade to entune 3.0 unit with ACP and AA wouldnt fit your needs?

 

I sometimes use my Entune GPS, but I prefer using my iPhone for GPS... It's there and never needs updating!

 

You have a model # or link for what you used?

It's not Premium...just the standard SR5 unit. I'm not looking to improve the audio quality; that's fine as far as my ears can tell. My main concern is GPS/navigation. I don't use it frequently, but when I do (road trips, vacation and scout trips), I need it to be reliable. The Scout GPS has been marginally so. I sometimes resort to using Google maps on my phone, but haven't found a good mount to keep that in my line of sight while driving.

It probably would. I came in here looking for options. If that's an easy one (swapping in a newer/upgraded factory head unit), I'm all for it. Is there a specific part # I should be looking for? I live just outside Philadelphia, so there's no shortage of scrapyards in the area to check for one.

 

the non CD 2020 + radio is an 86140-4200. It has ACP and AA. All you need is a new harness from autoharnesshouse.com. I do have that radio in a box sitting in South Jersey. Funny, I'm heading into the city at 1 pm. I was going to upgrade to this head unit , but really want one with a CD player.

 

Does that have HD radio? If so, and you're not going to use it, would you be willing to sell?

 

it has HD radio. Yes, I might sell it, Im trying to find the CD version out of a right now and upgrade to that if I can, since I do play CD's in my current 17

 

Correction.... the number of the unit I have is 86140-4230. that is the unit without CD, and ACP and AA. The 4200 is the CD version with Nav integrated.
