60+ year old thread.

Worst thing is I HATE needles and my favorite nurse retired, she was good at it, especially with chickens like me.

 

Good Friday Morning Porch Pals & Sue! Save travels, stay dry, get feeling better, take those pills, and make that shot! Me, I'm running to Lowe's and waiting for the 97* record for October this late!

 

I prefer the ones when they try to start IV's that struggle and poke you multiple times or jab it in, then rotate pushing it around trying to find the vain like they are practicing on orange or something, like you don't have any feelings.

 

Just had blood drawn this morning and the girl was good. One stick and it was good. Needles don't bother me but my wife who drew blood for a living HATES needles so she learned different ways to take ones mind off of getting stuck. Talked about travel, or oother topics people liked and before you know it the bandaid was on she said your done . There were folks that would only let her draw their blood. She did say that men were the worst with fear of the needle. She would laugh and tell me she could chase away a 250 lb. male with just pulling out a needle, thats how much some hated needles.

 

I am on that list of needle haters.

 

I went in to a blood draw clinic with my son, at the time about eight or nine, and he asked me if it was going to hurt. I told him it was going to hurt, but it was only going to be a little hurt and it would be over quickly. He asked if he could scream, and I said sure. So when he got stuck he screamed pretty loudly. You should have seen the faces in the waiting room when we walked out. Eyes wide, like saucers, all around the room.

You can add me to that list of needle haters, I still say the old doc who gave me all my childhood shots resharpened his needles on a grindstone!

 

For those of you who might be a bit squeamish or otherwise faint of heart, skip this post.

I'll title this post, "Adventures in Prostate Biopsy"

I had a recent health check and my blood test came back with a PSA of 94! The doctor said, "There is a 99% chance you have Prostate Cancer; we need to get you in for a biopsy ASAP."

Well, today was the biopsy event, and yeah, I think I'd rather a prep for a crown or a root canal than go through this again. Without getting into all of the gory details, it should suffice to say having a dozen punctures between the lower digestive tract and your prostate is a tad uncomfortable. So far feeling pretty good considering, but I'll be on pins and needles for the next several weeks while the lab work is done and then get me in for a 3D MRI.

I'll keep y'all posted.

Spent the morning cleaning up the patio in preparation for Sunday brunch with a couple of neighbors. Zing Zang Bloody Mary Mix, Mimosas, along with light munchies. (Costco run tomorrow on Saturday)
Cleaned all the cobwebs from the patio furniture that had been covered, some little critter left a few deposits on one of the chair cushions. Cleaned up nicely with Simple Green. One more run to the store
now for minor items. (I'm running low on J.D.!) Very nice weather today in San Diego (Close to Miramar Air Base/Poway), should be great weather for Sunday.
AND, sprayed the yard for mosquitos!

 

Fingers crossed for favorable results and prayers for you Dale. I had prostate ca. 3 years ago. It was low grade and had not metastasized. I chose brachytherapy as my treatment. Very successful. We generally don’t like to say “cured” in respect to cancer but my urologist and I are referring to it as cured. My psa remains basically undetectable at 0.04 and has for the last 2 years.
Prostate cancer is a very slow growing form of cancer and there are numerous very effective and successful treatment options even when it has metastasized. It is said if a man lives long enough he will die with prostate ca. not of it. 80% of men who reach 80 have cancer cells in their prostate. Good luck Dale, let us know how it goes.

for you Dale, hoping for positive results. Forgot, I think my hunting buddy had/has prostate cancer also, that poor guy sure has his share of issues.
We didn't hunt this morning because of predicted rain, then NO RAIN , this afternoon my buddy had an appointment to get a shot in his eye, SUPPOSED to rain tomorrow and no hunting Sunday, hopefully we'll be back at it on Mon. and that his eye is good to go.

 

for this one, and the following - every needle sticker in any hospital should be required to serve 6 months in a blood draw lab! Those gals know what they are doing!

Didn't like, but best wishes. I thought it was overkill, but the Docs all said my numbers said surgery or radiation. Surgery reviews were NOT good at that time, so radiation it was. Put this way; a vasectomy, prostrate radiation, and diabetes will make any "pill" have to work very hard to make "hard work".

 

I'm one of those that watches the needle stick during annual blood draws. In a way, it's fascinating. The best phlebotomists can talk and stick at the same time.

 

When I moved to Tucson - the search began for a local physician. I ended up - for about a year and a half with a gentleman at the University Hospital whose card said that he was also an assistant professor of internal medicine at the U of A. His statement to me about prostate cancer - that was a shock, was that in the cadaver lab he had never seen an American male over the age of 60 that did not have cancer cells present in the prostate. In his opinion it was general condition present in all human males. His opinion of the accuracy of PSA tests was also just about nil, saying that a biopsy was appropriate for judgement - but as an indicator, the PSA test wasn't. From what I've read on the subject (not espoused by organizations that benefit financially) he is not alone in this opinion.
