Not Chinese owned brands, that's the market that matters when it comes to EV sales. I might choose a Rivian over a TNGA-F Toyota right, but as a product that makes money I'd still go with Toyota.

You must have missed the names like Audi, BMW, Mercedes, Hyundai, Kia, Lexus, Jaguar, Vinfast…the list provided clearly shows foreign automakers selling EVs in the US. You must have also missed that Tesla (a US company) outsold every other electric car company worldwide in 2022 - without including its US car sales at all.

It’s laughable that you think those are US companies just because they do business in the country.

The reason chinese brands aren't sold here has nothing to do with being "allowed", they have apply, then submit vehicles for lab testing to get NTSB approval in order to receive DOT certification sticker, that's the crash tests, emission testing etc... To date they haven't done that because to this point they do not build the vehicles to our standards. Plenty of people here would pony up for a chinese BMW knockoff if they could, electric or not. When they decide to jump through the hoops and build a safe car we'll see them sold here. I suspect it's coming.

Not quite sure how Rivian could make money from the Tacoma but great contribution to the discussion, as always.

I just had a Chinese made plug in hybrid vehicle as a rental car in Europe. It was a Link & Co 01. It was a little weird at first but by the end of the week I actually liked it. I would probably buy one if they were sold here in the US.

It was a strange car. It had blue accents all over the outside and inside. Kind of luxury but cheap at the same time. I had never even heard of that manufacturer before.

I'm fairly sure it's the first time I've heard of them. Not memorable, that's for sure.

I really do not like the look of rivians, but to each their own. A guy that sometimes joins my friends and I in our mtb rides drives a rivian, and he is extremely cocky about the sport while being a below beginner level rider. Maybe that put a bad taste in my mouth

The look of the R1T has grown on me a lot, now that I'm seeing more of them on the road. I still hate the headlights, though.

Looks like Toyota is coming out with a Rivian truck with different headlights, a steering yoke, and no gear tunnel

Are their designers trolling the market by seeing just how fugly they can make their front ends before people stop buying them!? Good Lord that rendering made me gag. But the fanbois will line up with their bowls to eat up whatever Toyoda San decides to bestow upon them.

Not needing a grille seems to really confuse the designers.

Also why does Toyota keep making the glass in the rear doors smaller and smaller?

This probably more of a Maverick sized, and unibody truck. I don't see many people asking for a full electric Tacoma, I know there's about five people here who would want one. I don't see lines of people walking into Ford dealerships asking for an electric Maverick either. Who is Toyota planning on selling this truck to? Why build a 4dr compact pick up with minimal rear seat room, and minimal bed space when you can add usable bed space and get rid of the barely usable interior space and use the same wheel base? Toyota wouldn't have to waste time developing a folding tailgate.

A plug in hybrid would be a smarter route. They are functional for all types of driving and people actually want them. I see tons of 4XE Jeeps on the road lately.
