Most Ruffed Grouse down here are the so-called "Brown Morph".
Though it seems they run the spectrum.
Some Grouse I've shot had varying amounts of gray on their plumage.
I only once bagged one that could be called "Gray Morph", but it wasn't quite as gray as that one.

Grouse "Hunting" with Gritto

A couple buddies used to hunt Whitetails in Maine every year, and would tell me their stories.
They went to a guide camp in northern Maine, a very sparsely populated place.
When I say "sparsely populated" I mean practically uninhabited.
It was near the area on the Appalachian Trail called the "Hundred Mile Wilderness".
If you lose the Trail or otherwise get in trouble there and other hikers don't find you quickly, then God help you.

According to them it isn't just people that are sparse there, but Whitetail Deer as well
But apparently they're pretty big, and perhaps not as wary as the deer in PA, which are under heavier hunting pressure.
They also remarked on how godawful cold it got there.

I'd think: "And you paid how much for that privilege?"

So what in tarnation does this have to do with Grouse (I hear you asking)?
If you're still with me, I'll tell you

Anyway, they said that the Ruffed Grouse there see so few people that they're almost tame.
Which is a far cry from their behavior in these parts.
The Guides had a couple shotguns at camp.
If the guys got too bored (or disgusted) they could go bag a couple Grouse for dinner.
Walk along a gravel logging road in the early evening and there they'd be, pecking grit to fill their gizzards.
Like shooting chickens, they said
