My wife made a longer than normal trip and the water pump bearing failed while she was away with the truck (2005 v6 prerunner) it brought the truck to a stop and it had to be towed home .... I've replaced the water pump, radiator, harmonic balancer, and battery. At that point it wouldn't start but I discovered it somehow was TOTALLY OUT OF FUEL. I put fuel in it and it still won't crank...m it turns over and even sputtered ... barely... please any help is appreciated

    You sure it's not cooked?
You may want to pop the radiator cap off and make sure it's not puffing out of it while cranking.

If that looks good pull a spark plug out and see what it looks like, make sure they aren't flooded with gas or coolant.

When faced with a problem, I like to begin with the easy stuff possible causes.

Immobilizer. I think when the key is in the icon should stop flashing.

Fuel pump resistor didn’t get unplugged.

Fuses are all good confirmed by testing not just looking at them.

    Scan for stored obd codes.

Retrace what you did. Nothing got left unplugged. None of the connectors are wet.

Pull plugs for sure, take a step back and analyze.

Also if the heads are pooched you can usually see compression come out the rad cap while cranking. When its really bad you can hear it lol.

Overheated and roached heads/gaskets or something similar unless the fuel pump took a dump.

You sure you didn't have the timing chain jump a tooth?

give it squirt of starter fluid and try and start it. If it starts for second the she is probably not getting fuel.

Fuel pumps do not like to be run dry so if everything else checks out, check for fuel pressure.

'still won't crank' then 'it turns over'. ? Contradicting - I don't have Tacoma expertise/experience with this situation but do with another truck recently. It would crank, but wouldn't start. It would sputter after cranking if I let it sit for a few minutes and cranking again.
It actually ran once for about 10 seconds. Ended up being a bad fuel pump. But your situation seems somehow related to the water pump replacement. I don't know how accessible the fuel pump is, but I verified there was 12v at the connector where it should be. Spraying starter fluid in the throttle body, it did start briefly, and backfired.

Not sure on Tacomas, but some trucks have interchangeable relays with the fuel pump relay. I brought the relay inside, applied 12v and verified the closure. I didn't think it would be as simple as a relay.

What does a water pump failure have to do with a harmonic balancer?
