4x4 problem 05 automatic

goes in to 4 wheel drive just fine ,but takes about 1/2 mile to come out while light is blinking when it does come out it bangs

 

bad transfer case?

 

only 49k never used 4 wheel drive but 4or5 times per year

 

tried all the letting off gas stuff

 

X3!! I do this every time I shift out of 4x4 since the first time I had that "bang" 4x4 disengage. Def doesnt sound like you have an issue just operator error like the rest of us that have experienced this
Should it do it...ehh prob coulda been designed a tad different maybe, but once you figure out how to prevent it.....it doesnt matter.

So..... turn switch to 2wd and let off Gas about half a second later. prob solved.

If not....after several attempts at this method, maybeeeee and I doubt it.......there is a slight posibility that the front axle diff/transfer case servo(s) is slow.

 

OK......I promise you, if you let off the gas too early, your prob will be the same every time. However....is this a new prob? did it just start doing this?

 

just started about a month ago

 

I find it easier to do when stopped

put in neutral

select or de-select 4WD

put back in gear.

Also you should be putting your truck in 4WD

about once a month, even for a short distance

to keep everything in working order.

i do mine on the 1st of the month ( easier for me to remember )

 

The bang is from wind-up. Don't drive on dry pavement, don't switch in and out of 4-wheel while turning the wheel (e.g. going around a sharp curve or parking lot), and don't shift when putting a load on the driveshaft (e.g. going up a hill or accelerating quickly). If you just took a turn that caused wind-up, drive straight for a little bit then disengage and it shouldn't bang because the driveshaft had an opportunity to un-wind.

However, it could be something more such as low gear oil in the transfer case...check your level too.

 

I put the transmission in neutral and push the brakes quick and it pops out fine. Gotta get the tension off.

 

Put the truck in N while stopped. Turn to 2wd and sit untill it click out of 4wd. Then if you must, Back up a few feet, then go

 

I to have this same problem with my 08 4x4,doesn't do it all the time. Have tried all things suggested, even driving straight before disengagement, sometimes it bangs sometimes it doesn't. I have had problem from new, tech at dealer has heard the disengage prob. no tsb's the only way it doesen't bang is to stop before I disengage 4x4. By the way I'm new here and had just been reading until I saw this. Hi everyone.

 

The bang I hear is very lowd, like something is going to break, then other times I'll just hear a click when disengaged

I once had a problem where it would not come out 4x4L it just kept flashing and then beeped at me. I did have a heavy (read overloaded) bed full of fresh cut logs, I was going up a hill coming out of the woods onto the winding road and it would not come out. I tried nuetral, rev, light gas, no gas. It took a min but it was one of the longest of me life (1,000 out of extended warranty)

 

mine goes to shop Monday Oh boy !!!! made last payment 2 months ago !!! CRAP

Front actuator bad $507 plus tax from dealership

 

Will be repaired Thursday I hope
