Better filling options than Slippery Pete?

Hey folks,

Has anyone now serviced diffs, T Case and manual trans a few times that has a better option than the slippery pete bottle pump?

I have been through all the threads on this and they were very helpful..but now that they are a liittle old I thought someone may have some more recent experience.

I filled my rear diff pretty easily-used flex bags and all went in ok. The front diff needed it to be pumped. The slippery pete pump took forever, and half a quart ended up on the garage floor.

I wouldn't mind spending a little on a better pump since I am saving by DIY. Or, is there a better option such as a good old funnel? How about those steel funnels? Are those easier since the tube does not bend?

The hardest parts of this job are dropping the skid plates and cleaning up the mess.

My manual trans is next-hoping to avoid the mess this time.

I despise bottle pumps with a passion and pretty much refuse to use them.

I use a syringe for the front diff and historically the rear diff:

I've been using Driven Oil for my transmission and transfer case (80W-90 GL4). For the transfer case I can just squeeze it right in using the tall bottle it comes in. The amount of slant I can get on the bottle lets me use about 80%, so I dump the last 20% into a new bottle so that I'm not wasting it. On the transmission, I always remove the shifter and fill plug and dump it in through the shift hole until it comes out of the fill hole. Midway through the 3rd bottle I'm done with the transmission. I don't even use a fully since I have the pointy tip.

For rear diff, I'm going to try the Driven bottles next time and see if I can squeeze it in, especially with the spare tire removed. If not, then I will pull out the syringe. I was using the syringe with Torco oil bottles which don't have a spout, so I had no choice but to use the syringe, a crappy pump, or transfer the fluid to a different bottle. So I used the syringe.

The front diff has no access so you need a syringe or pump of some sort.

 

These pouches work awesome, best thing to use IMO and I have used the pump many times. If you don't like Amsoil I believe you can buy just the pouches on Amazon or someplace.

 

Thanks. Looks like there are two Mityvac extractors. Do you know the capacity of the one you referenced? For double the price there is one that takes 1.5L. That may be too big/heavy even though in theory you can fill the front diff in one shot.

Re: the rear diff-I lowered my spare and filled it easily with just the flex bags. The spare should be lowered occasionally anyway to make sure the mechanism doesn't sieze so I don't feel bad about the extra step.

For the transmission and transfer case I have some Redline I was going to use and those are in regular bottles-not the ones with the pointy tip so I need some way to dispense.

The front diff was a disaster but it is done.

 

I have the smaller one. Never saw the larger one until later. I do think it would be nice because it holds so much volume, but it holds more than a bottle so you’d need two bottles open so you could get a complete fill using both of them. Mine I think is 0.2L so it would be a big difference to use the larger one.

I also hate the bottle pump. For the rear diff i just turn the bottle upside down and have a small stack of shop towels underneath. Somehow that's less messy than using a pump. For my transmission I used this transfer pump. It moves fluids in a hurry, but you pretty much need one per fluid type, as its a pain to clean out.

 

Get a few feet of clear plastic tube and fill the diff from the driver's side wheelwell

 

For the front diff use some poly tubing from Home Depot. Snake it down from the engine bay and you’re all set, assuming you buy stuff with the nipple cap like most do. The guy who made the 3rd Gen Maintenance Maps on this site demonstrates it in his video for this task.

I was able to squeeze oil into the T case with the same type of bottle. Squeeze pouches work for this too.

The manual transmission was easy with the cheap pump from AutoZone… sorry. Even if I have to buy a new one for $11 when I do the service again in 2 years, no biggie. If I did this for a living maybe I’d find a better way.

Shouldn’t need special fluid transfer tools for the rear diff.

Whoever said they fill their transmission from the shifter sounds loco lol. Did they mean inside the cabin? Really? The fill plug is easy to access. My biggest “problem” was not being able to use my torque adaptor to torque that fill plug.

 

Don't knock it til you try it. I'm over lying on my back trying to pump 3 quarts with a greasy hand pump when I can dump it right in. I can remove the shifter in less than 3 minutes. Yeah, it's in the cab, I'm careful and that is not a problem. If you're not careful, then maybe it's not a good move for you.

 

I’m careful and deliberate, but fine with laying on the garage floor. I’m risk-averse to spilling in the cab and don’t wanna take the console apart. Good to know it can be done I guess haha! You’re still a little bit crazy though

 

Thanks guys. Funnel plus tube for through the drivers side wheel well seems like the ticket for the front diff.

who makes a decent t case lube in squeeze pouches? I thought the full was something very special with limited compatibility ?

I’m with you, no darn way I’m bringing that lube into the cab.

Funnel, clear poly hose through the engine compartment works extremely well.

 

Definitely just communicate with your helper when nearing the full mark. Add some, let it drain down and see if it weeps out, if not add a little more and wait. Better than having 4ft of tube full of oil when the diff is full and trying to get that situation sorted out haha!

 

I have one of these I've used for years on other vehicles and side by sides. the spout is threaded for all oil bottles so it ought to work on the Taco too.

Thanks. Looks like there are two sizes of oil bottles. The small like on the pouch and the large like on the amsoil plastic bottles. Will this fit both?

 

I purchased and have used the Motive Power Fill on my Tacoma as well as other vehicles for adding new fluid the differentials, transfer case, transmission, etc....

That motive tool looks great. Unfortunately I do not have a robust compressor in the garage. Do you know if it will work without one?

 

Yes, this tank can be pumped up just like a yard spray spray tank or an air compressor. I have always just pumped it up by hand.

I personally use a mac tools version of this but you need a drill or other powered tool with a 3/8" drive to run it.
