You know I normally venture into the "whys" and all but a link felt like the most appropriate answer

His step son will absolutely love that thing.

Keep in mind that you'll still need to get a tank of gas from your local welding supply store as well. Normally mig uses straight argon gas, but other mixtures are available for other types of welding and materials to be welded.

Quoting myself cause, those remnants I bought for my shelf? It's already paying me back times four -

    20231022_130235.jpg

Anyone that does CNC plasma can appreciate this, and I'll explain why -

I had trouble drawing this whole thing, specifically because it needed to be a specific size (no more than 7").

Well, even after making multiple profiles with either center or sideways compensation, lead-ins shortened to 1/8" and more, I continued to have linking constraint issues; for those that don't know it means your cuts are too close together and that part of your profile is omitted.

So, I scaled up my drawing for a +10" model and was able to create my profiles.

The best part? In my controller software I scaled it down to a factor of 0.65 in hopes that it'd retain many of the details and shit you not it did!

    20231022_130425.jpg

Here's the left over from all that -

    20231022_130702.jpg

    20231022_145513.jpg

Cutting stuff is one thing, but cutting stuff to such tight tolerances and making it work multiple times over just feels so good.

    20231022_145615.jpg

Need to buy some morw 16 gauge to cut the rest out, not to mention make stuff for another customer.

This Raider's fan was a word-of-mouth customer I just talked to yesterday and met today so I'll be cutting more for him in the future.

Oh no, maybe I phrased that incorrectly  (typing on a phone with no proof reading)

No help needed, more like, I got a level of detail that programming wouldn't allow cause "on paper" it wouldn't have worked

And this is maybe the 3rd or 4th time I've done something similar, and I've been successful every time :D

Having TIG welded professionally, as well as having learned in an appropriate setting, I'll share what I've learned and why I do what I do.

Many TIG welders (specifically the older folks) would say just use a grinding wheel. It's fast and it works.

In fact, it's best to chuck it up on a hand drill, and turn it while running it on the grinding wheel. You can go this route as it works really well.

I didn't want a grinding wheel, even though that setup you linked does include one; I own it.

    20231023_094710.jpg

Instead I opted to remove the grinding wheel to make use of another wheel for more versatility and opted for a dedicated tungsten grinder recommended by another member here. It's actually cheaper overall than the HF offering and being as compact as it is, means you won't need a dedicated spot for said tool.

Just don't use the abrasive belt to sharpen your tungsten with as any contaminants from cleaning up metal can embed themselves into your tungsten. It's why you use separate brushes and discs for cutting or cleaning up aluminum, mild steel, and stainless steel.

I do know about the contamination issue, I planned on using the grinding wheel for tungsten then the belt for final shaping type stuff if that makes sense. I know the grinding wheel will be decent enough but how is the belt for grinding down 1/8" for example? Does the belt work for belt grinding or is a complete POS?

When I bought it, I intentionally kept the box for a good month before tossing it (just tossed the box days ago) cause I expected it to bog down or worse.

Nope, you can push metal into it and it runs without issue.

I use it for quick clean-up and shaping and it works well for that. Hard to answer about the 1/8" cause I don't know if you're removing that much material or what.

I normally dabble in 10 gauge (thicker than 1/8") and above with 3/16" being ny choice of thickness.

Oh, one thing I don't like is the shelf on the belt sander is really small/short.

    Had to make my own.

Depends what year in my life; my first was an '89 C4 with an L98 and ZF 6 speed.

I've owned maybe 14-15 of them with my last Corvette being a C6 I sold a few years ago (pics in ny old thread).

    https://www.calguns.net/calgunforum/showthread.php?t=1508337

    Only ones I own are a 2004 C5 Z06 and a 1994 C4; the C4 has a built 383, stalled, with a high performance 4L80E all on a painless stand alone.

As for the judging lol friends will tell you I'm the complete opposite of a typical Corvette owner.

I don't play golf, or even own a Hawaiian shirt much less New Balance shoes, and I ain't white or old

Speaking of that last Vette, I still have the window sticker somewhere. Bought that bitch for my birthday....I'll post it up if I find it or the last pic I took of it.

    @weldertaco

Definitely a driver's car, much more fun than the M3 I used to have but not quite on rails as the RX7.

Now I just drive old boring vehicles and need to get my Ferd going :bananadead:
