When my 4wd was acting up it was a dirty 4wd relay in the fuse box. Was an easy fix. Never had an issue after that

the timing of the 4wd not working suspiciously lines up with me unpligging and replugging everything related to the transmisison and transfer case 3 times over

    no doubt.

Either way, it sounds like an electrical issue.

You just described one of my worst nightmares towing. It is why I carry at least one, sometimes two $25 BC extinguishers a laser temp gun a torque wrench and two different 8 pin to 7 blade trailer connector adapters. My car hauler has an old 8 pin with the center pin aux but I know some 8 pin trailer connectors were wired with center pin brake. So a rogue, stuck brake on the driver's side front tire was root cause do you think? If it were just loose lug nuts you wouldn't have had the fire I 'm thinking.

I'm happy you were able to get out of this without injury or damaging your vehicles. You have a nice stable of cars. I drove ~750 miles through central Montana through Judith Gap this past weekend to deliver a 69 Nova and had almost no cell reception for several 60 mile segments. My trusty 81 GMC Dually with a 7.4 and 4 speed manual was flawless (albeit a little slow -- 67 MPH is 2750 RPM in 4th -- she has a Tremec T56 six speed in her future).

While the lug nuts being loose was annoying, the root cause was a bad bearing. It either had not been grease/serviced properly, or the damage on the fender indicates that previous it was hot and that damage finally came to light. That is why there was excessive heat with the whole thing. It was a small fire, just burning off what residual heat was left and I wasn't concerned from my initial analysis that it was going to grow/spread.

Looking back, I do remember on my last fill up just prior to the incident, I had noticed that that tire had some camber to it, but in my lack of experience with trailers and towing, I assumed it was fine, it had made it this far but would just cause weird wear on the tire. In the future, I will certainly be more sensitive to it.

Not to mention, I don't believe the uhaul trailers use an electronic trailer brake system. Talking with @Speedytech7 he described it as a surge brake system. Not familiar with it.

That's a badass tow rig you have. Simple and works. Love seeing old trucks like that worked and loved for. I have a nova as well, but would much prefer the one in the trailer

Surge brakes operate by the ballhitch portion being a sliding member and when the trailer weight compresses the sliding portion it actuates a master cylinder that applies the brakes hydraulically. Which is why backing up one of these trailers can suck too since that will also activate the brakes. There's no electronic components involved and no user specific input, if you stop inertia does its thing with the trailer until it compresses the master cyl enough to start stopping too.

Can see how the hitch portion is a sliding member and acts on the master cyl here

That makes sense. I didn't hook it up and really didn't look at it due to my situation of just trying to get the fuck home haha. Didn't have issues with the brakes but then again, I didn't have a lot of time to experience them. Overall I will say the trailers are rather brilliant in their design. Built for a specific purpose and seem to be good at it. Biggest gripe was the fact that I got trapped in my car after loading it. Can't open the doors due to the fenders... But raising the bed height would've made it almost impossible to load a car as low as mine so compromises. Dukes of Hazard it out and left the window down. Wouldve been interesting to find a solution had the weather been different.

Those trailers are pretty good yeah, they're built to be moron proof that's why they have the anti-jackknife bumpers and a stupid long tongue. But that also means you usually end up with a fuckload of tongue weight :/ I've used em a lot after moving so many damn times though and as long as they aren't totally shagged like yours they're usually pretty problem free. I've lost tires on 2 out of 8 haha, but never the whole hub like you.

Wait, did you not know the driver side fender folds down so you can get your door open?

Ironically the tires were brand new on the trailer....

Honestly if I needed a call hauler I would be thrilled to have a trailer like it at my disposal. I'll just keep renting when I need one.

ive had a few bearings go out on the boat trailer. One got the tire so hot, almost like yours, i was convinced I was going to set it and whole fiberglass mess abalze in the national park.

My freinds give me shit because i stop and feel the bearings every hour (or every time I stop) when towing, but the quicker you catch it the easier it is to fix, so a 1 minute stop every hour to do a walk around and feel the bearing caps is well worth it to me. I caught one like this last year just before going over teton pass at 10 pm. Left it in driggs and came back the next day and fixed it.

    also news to me lol.

I do the same, not every hour but generally ends up being every two hours ish. Either need to pee or get fuel lol. Though I use a infra red temp gun.

Will say even doing that isnt perfect. I borrowed a trailer to go to the east coast and back. Loaded up my wife's old international pickup truck and drove it all the way back. Temps were always 100-110F on the passenger and 120-140 on the drivers. (dual axle trailer mind you and both sets on each side were the same). Figured the brakes were just set a bit tighter on the drivers side or just a bit more weight. But it towed just fine. Got it home and was changing the bearings as "payment" for borrowing it. Went to pull the rear drivers side apart....first thing i notice is the outer bearing was missing one or two rollers. Pull the hub off and that bearing just completely fell apart. Was damn glad it didnt cause any issues on the road!

U-haul trailers are definitely built great. Just poorly maintained. And some abuse from users too. Ive luckily only ever had a minor issue on the road, but doing inspections on some of them isnt reassuring. Found loose lug nuts, wrong lug nuts, lights that dont work, and tires in just poor shape. Bring it up to the place trying to rent it and they dont care. Tell me to try a different trailer or pretty much say "take it or leave it". Even when i had an issue....which was just the night time running lights stopped working, was told to just park the trailer as it was already reserved and they didnt care. (upon returning it)

phew. 4wd was just a loose connection. so glad i didnt have to hunt down some other gremlin problem. Dont got time for that shit right now. Also while i was down there i discovered the kick down cable on the new trans was broken so it wasnt retracting back, hence causing the aggressive shifts. pulled the good one off the broken trans, dropped the trans pan for the 15th fucking time, and got that replaced.

Afternoon gents, secured a job in Rawlins and will be moving from VA by the end of next month. The only box I’m having trouble checking is securing a house for rent. All ads I see on Zillow and alike apps, the independent owner seems super sketch. Throwing a Hail Mary to see if any of y’all know of any spots :fingerscrossed:

Find a local Rawlins community Facebook page. There are likely postings on it. That's how it is where I'm at anyway.

Might check for something in Sinclair as well. About a 10 min drive from Rawlins. It's a small town around the refinery. When I had a project there I checked with the realtors and found a place for my crew. They are your best bet
