Okay so I have a 97 tacoma and I picked up an e locker out of a 1st gen tacoma. I saw that with a little fab work I should be able to make it work in my stock housing. I'm open to some input. have you done this before? does it not work? is there some kits available that make this easier? open Screenshot_20231019_112925_Facebook.jpg 20231011_173425.jpg Screenshot_20231019_112925_Facebook.jpg discussion tell me what you know!!

If you only got the 3rd member you're gonna need the rear axle/diff carrier assembly to have somewhere to mount the locker actuator up too. Really doubt the non-locker carrier could be fabbed up to fit the e-locker diff, at least not easily or more cost effectively than just buying the rear axle assembly and swapping it.

I tried going that route, and ultimately it was too much money and work to justify using stock parts. I went with an Eaton E locker and have been extremely happy since.

I haven't seen anyone retro an 8" elock third member to a 8.4" housing. Keep in mind, tacoma do not have an 8" open third like the earlier 4r/pickup.

Best bet is to buy the entire rear axle assembly. Locally, can be had for $6-800 complete.

It is possible. Make sure your gears match the front. You have to weld up the sealing surface on 1 corner and then drill and tap a couple of holes to add a couple of studs. Not impossible if you have some time and a welder.

I couldn't find any complete locked rear axles for less than $1200 in Socal. People wanted locked 3rds for $600-$900.

I'm sure deals are out there, but they're extremely rare.

A few hours north (central valley) is the sweet spot. I see complete elock rear axle for the price I put. For $1200 here, you'll get a fresh rebuilt with gear.

I'm sure this guy will take 5 rack $650 for complete rear elock but need rebuilt. Great deal if you plan on a regear Or this seller should take 9 rack

    Just 3 tons of fun!!!
I just pulled my rear axle a couple days ago. It's available.

5.29 Nitro gears (3 years old)
New drums and shoes (6 months)
Bearings and seals replaced (about 3 years ago)
Low Range Off Road diff cover
Low range Off Road locker guard
    Locker rebuilt last year
Lower shock mounts for shock relocate already on
    Ubolt flip kit

Here's pics from right after it was just pulled from the truck. That is not any oil leakage. The brakes pissed all over the place when I disconnected them.

Speaking of... when you did your 9.5, did you do anything to account for the added length of the 3rd member? (9.5 in an inch longer from mounting surface to the driveline flange).

Did you move the axle back on the leafs or cut the driveline or anything? If not, does it ever cause problem at full stuff?

Yes, I pushed the rear axle ~2" back. As for driveline, I'm running a 50" (IIRC) 1-piece 2.75ODx.156"wall driveline due to the triple crawl box.

Aren't the TRD axles quite a bit weaker tho? I'd rather have an Eaton in a factory-unlocked axle. I've never hear a bad word about the 8.4'', other than it being unlocked from the factory.
