Consolidated Super White 040 Paint Issue/Failure Thread - With Toyota Corp. Update

I've heard Ice cap is different and I've heard it the same. No one can get a straight answer on it.

I recently washed my white 2021 Tacoma and sadly I saw a pea sized spot above the driver side rear door missing paint and some bubbles next to it. 3 years old with 14k miles. Called Toyota Care # and told the no help/recalls available. Now I am unhappy with my truck that I was going to keep. It was my retirement gift to myself. I figure the spot is going to spread. I put some touch up paint to hide. My first white vehicle and this happens.

 

That is such horse shit Toyota won't do anything.

 

Ice cap is 0040. Super white is 040.

No one has been able to confirm if it's the same or different.

Everyone is just speculating at this point.

 

Even if Ice Cap was different than Super White, it wouldn’t fix the issue. The issue is the e-coat (primer). And it’s not just Toyotas. I’ve painted probably 50 peeling pearl white Hyundais, and multiple Hondas. It’s the same issue GM had in the 90s with Olympic White. The paint isn’t adhering to the e-coat.

Also, the only CORRECT way to fix them is to strip the entire truck to bare metal and start over completely, which I would say almost no shops are actually doing.

 

Then why don't the other colors peel?

Maybe the new white is the same color but with a different paint process that is similar to the other colors that don't have the issue?

 

I wonder what causes that bond to break. What's different when you re-paint the Hyundai's and the Honda's so they don't fail again?

Some suffer while the majority don't on the 3rd gen Tacoma's with 040. Only common denominator so far on the 3rd gen's are 2016/17 out of the Mexico plants. However, there have a rash of 18's 20's and 23 if I remember correctly.

Yes, we still have some of those white chev, 90's work vans in our fleet with that issue.

 

Could be numerous things. Time between primer and paint being applied, white being more prone to UV damage, or a pigment in the color itself not being compatible with the primer. Hopefully the manufacturers get it figured out though, because I’m tired of working on them lol.

We strip the effected areas to bare metal, epoxy primer, then paint.

This is a Honda I did the roof and pillars on last week, which then peeled one of the doors while untaping.

I wonder why the production date cutoff was September 2021. Did Toyota change something afterward? My truck was produced October 2021 and I don't know if that's good or bad.
