Looking for some advice on how to proceed.
    I have a 2003 Tacoma double cab trd 3.4 with e-locker. 250,000 miles.
I had a local shop rebuild the rear differential and replace both wheel bearings on my taco a month ago. When I picked it up he walked me through the Break in process. As I was driving it home I noticed a bit of whining at 35mph which was about the top speed for initial trip and about the first 50 miles. I’m up to about 250 miles and I’m still getting the noise and seems to be humming at 35 and then again at 65 mph. At 65 it sounds like a high pitch tuning fork.
I dropped it back off two weeks ago and he hasn’t really touched it since. I asked him yesterday about it and he said it was rebuilt within specs and that he would drive it some more and change the fluid.

Anyone on here with some experience on these rear diffs and what I should do going forward.

    Thanks!

Sounds like the pinion bearing. Very common if not shim correctly or damaged when installed.

I would push for a solution especially if the truck been sitting there for 2 weeks now.

    Why was the elocker rebuilt?

What I would do is reach out to the shop and ask what is their intention and solution. I would request a specific time when it will be fix as you need the vehicle.

If nothing happen, your should have a state sponsor automotive repair bureau. In CA, it's known as BAR (Bureau of Automotive Repair). BAR monitor and make sure the consumer don't get screw over vehicle repair. I would try to find a solution prior to reaching out for help but if all attempts fail, I would definitely call them (or who ever monitor repair shop in your jurisdiction).

The gears are not properly set. It’s specialized work that should only be entrusted to those that have many years of experience setting gears.
