    I can't wait for this!

Toyota is good with PHEV, but not with pick ups, 6th gen maybe? Maybe 5th gen will be a copy of the 4th gen, like the 3rd and 2nd gen.

Auto companies never just drop in a massive change like that 2nd year into production. They just invested probably hundreds of millions re-tooling their assembly lines to make the Tacoma configuration you already know about. Soonest that would happen would be a mid-cycle refresh 3-5 years later and knowing Toyota they will milk this product as long as they possibly can.

A PHEV will probably be my next truck. It fits my use case perfectly.

You are going to be waiting awhile unless you want a Gladiator. They were supposed to bring it out in 2024 but pushed it to 2025. But agree....fits me perfect as I drive less than 20 miles per day.

My wife loves her rav4 prime. She doesn't want a truck so hopefully I can get a colored matched cap trade it in and she'll never know.

Yep. Fortunately, I don't plan on buying anything for at least a few years.

What's the purpose of plug in hybrid? You get a little more electric range before the conventional engine takes over recharging the hybrid battery. You still have to gas it up, put it on the charger, and pay more up front. Must be one of those Jeep things I don't understand.

Big advantage of a plug in is if you're daily commute is withing the range of the electric,it will only cost you for the charge for most work day.
My daily commute is within 12 and 20 km,gaz cost vs electric cost would save me about around 1500$ a year,so i'm actually waiting just for that
yes it will cost more upfront and may affect load and towing capacity a little but in the end i could easily deal with that

Gas is still relatively cheap, a gallon of diesel fuel the most expensive option $5.745 average, is still cheaper than a gallon of milk $5.98 avarge in Hawaii.

The plug in hybrid worked great at first for my wife, but our electric rates almost doubled to .30 a kwh. When gas went down to $3 a gallon I stopped pluggin it in. But eventually I'll get solar or it would still make sense if you lived where the rates were reasonable. Plus we gut the full tax credit so it's was basically the same price as the gasser. If a PHEV tacoma is built here it should qualify for a tax break too.

Is demand for plug in trucks viable enough for assembly and sales to warrant it? I can see it for small trucks, but outside Maverick size I dunno.

I think they would be if they got enough electric range. The rav4 prime was 40-45 miles on full eletric for about 6 months of the year and 35 during the colder ones. If they could do that then I think there would be a market for anything up to the 1/2 ton. The jeep 4xe only got 20-25 so that wasn't enough for my wife to commute with. She doesn't have the option of charging at work so the rav4 won out. If they could bump up the gladiator plug in to 40 that would be perfect for us.

I keep reading articles and seeing news that seems to indicate EV sales aren’t doing well. EV Trucks seem like an outlier.

The BMW hybrid we have is slick, but I can’t help but think why bother? It’s a lot more fun in full twin turbo v6 gasoline M Sport mode.

I too keep seeing articles saying EV sales have slowed....but they never state numbers. When I look up the numbers it shows that EV sales in Q3 2023 are up 49% from Q3 2022. So I'm not sure what the hell they are talking about. Most articles cite the fact Ford shelved the $12billion planned for EV production and GM abandon their goals for 400k EVs by next year. But if you take a step back it seems obvious those weren't decisions made because of slowing EV sales....those were decisions they made because their entire workforce made up of UAW workers was on strike and they had no idea how to plan for the future. So it seems they are trying to spin the facts to paint a different picture.

PS: Your BMW has an inline 6, not a V6. :)

I think it is the fact that GM and Ford can't seem to make any money off EV that is pushing the narrative that EV sales are slowing...but they are slowing. GM and Ford as well as the general public need to understand they will not be profitable for many years after spending all the R&D money as well as building new factories. Just look how long it took Tesla to make a profit. GM and Ford as well as Stellantis need to ask themselves if there is a market for a $75k+ EV? I think Rivian is on a death watch. Tesla is averaging 55K in sales per month for 2023 but the last 3 months it has been at 51.6K. And they will just lower their price to drive sales up if needed. We shall see what the CT does in the next few months.

It's a weird market right now for sure. Car prices are just absolutely insane. Truck prices, are even worse. So while Rivian is priced at about $90k - EV incentives, it's kinda in line with a lot of nicer comparable gasoline trucks and or SUVs on the market today. I think they'll adapt and start doing really well. Keep in mind, like you mentioned in your post, Tesla wasn't profitable for quite some time. Similarly, Rivian is starting from scratch too and they've started with a MUCH nicer V1.0 product.

On the topic of profitability, I read somewhere that Tesla makes 8X (eight times) the profit on average than their next closest competitor. Tesla is now the gold standard for how to produce a vehicle at scale and turn WILD profits. This is why they will lead the way in cheap/less expensive EVs once they decide they want to. No other company can currently sell a decent product in that space and not lose money because they don't have enough margin to give up.

And Tesla's sales "slump" if you want to call it that is really because 2023 every other auto manufacturer FINALLY threw their hat into the ring. Prior to that point, it was pretty much just Tesla for options if you were shopping for a COMPETENT EV. Now that other players have arrived, the market share is just being divided among more players.
