Help or Info from any Toyota Technicians

I have checked them out but haven't pulled the trigger.

 

It's definitely a big help! I'm a former tech myself. Spent 15 years wrenchin' - over 10 of those with Toyota. It's shocking how far Toyota missed the mark with the factory tune in these trucks. I think after their trouble with the EPA, they chose to err on the side of caution with the tune in the current Tacomas and 4Runners. I think you'll be pleasantly surprised with out the outcome of a tune.

I see you're in Saranac Lake. That's not far from me. I'm in South Glens Falls. I'd be happy to let you come drive my KDMax tuned 2019 if you like. Kind of a try it before you buy it scenario! I'm sure you noticed as well that I'm the KDMax Pro tuner for this region, so if it's something you decide you like, I'd be happy to help get you tuned!

 

I was there, during that. Funny thing about that. The EPA rule at the time, was that the cars must produce X amount of noX while being tested on a Dyno. SO they programmed the car to recognize when it was on a dyno and switch to the test map. Parking brake set, vehicle in gear, front wheels turning with zero rear wheel speed.

VW pointed this out to the EPA, and the EPA dropped the billion dollar law suit. And made VW fix the software "issue", and replace a few emissions components that would have become less then efficient due to the programming. There were other manufactures doing the same thing. Just VW was called out, and made the example. The others quietly fixed their software.

 

I was in Queensbury just two days ago. I've been dealing with back and leg issues for sometime now. I had a visit to ADK Rehab and Med for conductive nerve testing. fun, fun.
I would like a tuner package. Preformance wise for sure but I am afraid of trade off's like other driveability concerns. I would have to see the latest. It been a while since I looked. I did a Sprint Booster, TRD cold air intake and throttle plate ext. It did make a difference but not like a tuner I'm sure. Send a link to the tuner you have.

 

Do mean a DIY option, so you can install/update tunes yourself? If so, that option for KDMax is handled by Chris LeBlanc (@wahoobie) of Tacoma Tuning, LLC. The remote tuning kit includes the necessary cable, OBDII dongle, and tune pack files to install the tune. You would need to provide a Windows laptop and, not required but certainly recommended, a battery tender like the Noco Genius 10 to supply steady voltage to the vehicle battery during the tuning process. I'm sure Chris will chime in here if you need additional details about cost and such, although I think he has that information on his website as well.

 

OP, what's your mileage? If within this, go to a different dealer or bitch to Toyota.

If out of warranty, it would suck to have to pay but it might address the issue though that's just spitballing, I'd have zero clue what that update would cost out of pocket

 

That's what the doc said. But VW tried to fool them twice. It tested great on the dyno with wheels pointed straight. Take it on the road and one steering wheel turn to the left would trigger the defeat device. Must have been bus communicated via the steering wheel control module.
I think the doc was part of a series on Netflix. It was a while ago.
We had a similar situation with the Eco-Desiel Ram. Bunch of module flashes and scan tool documentation we had to do.

 

2018. 32,458 miles. I have an extended warranty but have to look into that. See where I am.

 

Scott, if you're going to be in the area again sometime, I'd be happy to check your ECU ID and tell you if you're on the most recent calibration from Toyota. I'd even be willing to the Toyota update if needed, assuming you were comfortable with me doing so.

That all sounds normal to me.
Try hitting the ECT button before the hill and punch it.
Take it out of ECT after you reach the top.
