Good morning shop crew, have a great Friday!

My turn at appliance repairman today, time to defrost the ice maker. Again…

    Samsung refrigerator, enough said.

I did get a kit with a secondary heater for the evaporator coil which I installed a while ago. It helped with the coil icing up and causing the fan to make helicopter noises. That seems to have worked well for the evap coil. The kit contained a heated drain tube for the ice maker too, I just hadn’t installed that yet. It’s going in today since I’ll have the ice maker defrosted.

We have a Samsung as well and the drain froze up on it. I took a piece of solid copper wire and hooked it on the coil, down through the drain and haven’t had any issues since. My wife found that hack on the internet.

I had seen that hack too. Ironically, my drain tube for the evap coil didn’t freeze up. It was always at the top of the coil for me.

I’m not sure how well the heated drain tube for the ice maker is going to work. My ice maker keeps freezing up on the bottom of the ice cube tray until it blocks the sensor that tells it the bucket is full. The drain tube for the ice maker is inside the auger motor at the back of the compartment, not sure that’s going to help me :notsure:

If you can’t fix it with a hammer, you’ve got an electrical problem :smash:

The visiting Cat has a new idea to amuse itself .

Jumping off high places to land on me .

Humans for the most tend not to look over head for interesting things to pounce on them.

What does the sound of a cat laughing sound like??

A small price to pay for no rodents.

The little Bugger drug a Full Grown bushy tail rodent in this morning.

It sounds like the defrost for the tray is not working like it should .

Without looking closer at that model.

They tend to be pretty simple then i am used to the commercial models.

Now that I’ve had it apart and can see how it works I think it’s a couple of problems. The water fill for the ice maker just dumps into an angled piece on the top of the ice maker. Any drips or splashes fall right onto the cold plate on the bottom of the ice maker. Additionally, the drain tube was pretty small in diameter and the heater element for it was only about 2” long. I can see where that could freeze up pretty quick during the defrost cycles and cause the problem as the freeze over always started in the area of the drain and worked it’s way toward the front of the ice maker.

Running a forced defrost cycle before I started did melt the ice off the cold plate so it does get warm enough for that. Only other thing I can replace is the main motherboard.

silver is the old drain tube

Old tube is on the left
