Truck cranked and cranked this morning - four times I held it maybe 20 seconds. Let it sit with the key on for about 10 seconds, then cranked it after and finally fired up. Fuel pump?

 

I am, uh, not the guy to ask at the moment...

 

What happened?

 

Sounds about right… I mean as far as initial thoughts go. Either pump or clogged filter, that’d be where I’d start (pun intended).

 

Presumably water in the starter. In the middle of replacing it, but you have to be a world ranked tetris and jenga champion in order to get the thing out of where it's mounted, and then to get the new one back in.

For me, troubleshooting was as follows:

-Went to AOAA and hit some deep water accidentally on a Saturday. Truck seemed fine. Truck started and ran fine Sunday. Truck started and ran fine Monday. Truck would not start Tuesday. Jumped it, drove to work.

-After work, truck would not start. Jumped it, drove to Auto Zone who tested the battery, starter, and alternator, all apparently good. At the AZ parking lot, cranked my teuck up 3 times in a row without issue. Drove home.

-Wednesday truck would not start. Jumped and it started. Began exploring possible parasitic drain or ground fault issue.

-Tried to start, no start. Voltage looked good on battery, so I pulled it and brought it to Advance to test. Came back good, right CCAs. So the truck had a good battery but wouldn't start. Didn't even crank, just a single electrical click. Decided it has to be the starter. That's a PAIN in the ass to get out, and requires disconnecting the steering column yoke to do so. I tried tog et the new one in last night but haven't been able to negotiate back into position because again, it's a VERY tight spot and you need to be a tetris wizard to make it happen. Trying again tonight...

 

That's terrible man - so sorry. My GF has tiny hands - want me to send her?

 

Lol if she can figure out which way to rotate and shift this damn thing to get it into position, she's worth her weight in starters

 

Now it's splittin' time.

 

So uh. I have a bit of an oil leak. Thoughts?

 

Between the starter and now this… she’s a goner!! Time to go to Jones and get on the list for a 2024 Tacoma. Give them a deposit and they’ll call you in about a year.

Can you identify the source? Is it the pan gasket? It’s tough to tell by the pics. Once the starter is back in clean the oil and keep an eye out….

Did you plug the starter hole while it was out? Could oil be coming out of that hole and flowed down? I’m not sure if the shaft stays lubed or not.

 

At least I got the starter fixed!

 

I cannot yet identify the source. I may have to go under there and wipe it all dry in the morning, add oil, and let it run for a few minutes to see what's happening. This area is a foot or so forward of the starter so unfortunately I don't think that's the case.

 

Well, one problem fixed at least. Good luck finding the oil source
