Stuck Oil Filter Housing

Well, my used 2016 taco oil filter was stuck (my first oil change). With the oil filter socket, I tried: A ratchet, cordless impact driver, tapping on the plastic cap with a hammer, an air impact ratchet, a breaker bar and pipe extension, but the filter socket would just turn and slip off. So I put a bottle jack under the socket/breaker bar/filter socket/paper tower to make it a snug fit and pumped the jack to firmly seat the filter socket on to the plastic filter housing. Note, I actually razed the truck a half inch with the pressure from the jack. Put my foot on the extended breaker bar pipe and pushed really hard and SNAP it loosened, OMAFG

Last time I changed oil I used this

I went with Baxter adapter for spin on. Eff that filter housing!

 

Get a new oil filter cap……

do yourself a favor, and order a MotivX filter tool

 

It's a wonder the housing didn't snap and break

 

I went one step further and relocated the Baxter up top.

 

I don't understand why manufacturers just can't do this

 

That's some beast-mode torque there! I too am surprised that filter housing didn't shatter.

 

Granted this is a Friday thread, but holy buckets! 18" breaker, jack, and an aluminum pipe? wow! My '19 was stuck, the plug wouldn't come loose which then created a crazy mess on my TRD skid, but the MotivX unit solved the problem. Have both the nylon and the Lexus aluminum housing now. Waterjetted a "wrench" before I had the motiveX.

 

Stuck yes, but get the correct tool. Those sheet metal oil filter wrenches are not much better than just using giant channel locks.

 

They should work just fine if the housing is put on just "hand-tight" which is all that's necessary.

 

Sorry to hear about this, but the Motivx tool is super useful. I had the same issue yesterday, got a free change from the dealer and I ended up having to use a breaker bar with a hockey stick extension. At least from this point on it'll be a breeze.

That’s it! It’s not the “plastic” canister, it’s the dipshit that tightened it,,, not that the OP can go back and figure who do it with a used truck, but let’s recognize the real source of the problem.

 

The filter on the FJ is like this…..it’s AWESOME

 

I’ve noticed that every time someone has one of these stuck canisters and the wrench slips, they aren’t using the Toyota oil filter wrench. It grips the canister in a much more secure way then the common aftermarket wrenches. AST TOY-640.

 

There are much better tools than that one. You want one that is a six point & fits WELL, like the MotivX

 

On the left the cheapie cast pot metal it works ok, but the Blue Point on the right is smaller fits into tight areas better and fits tighter around the canister, you can tell the difference just holding the tools in your hands. I got it off eBay and didn’t pay much. Notice the Blue Point is made of tool steel, not stamped not cast, not aluminum. Also uses 1/2 in Drive compared to 3/8 on most others. Cheap tools just make jobs more difficult.
