Sorry boys, but all your EV crap is for naught. Not only are those vehicles not environmentally as friendly as a Tacoma, but they end up costing way more to you the owner.

We still dont know what we will do with the dead batteries. Or is there a way to rebuild them like a motor?

I am not opposed to EV. Just concerned with the idea of building a plane while we fly. If we dont know how we will disregard these batteries, that concerns me. But i guess it cant be any different as to how we disregard vehicles.

 

Battery technology is constantly evolving. But, in a lot of cases, they are being recycled or repurposed.

Most motors don't get rebuilt. Don't let perfection be the enemy of progress. Are EVs perfect? Nah. But the more we incorporate them, the better they get. No one was getting 35mpg in 1908, but progress and constant improvement resulted in that evolution, mutually beneficial to consumers, the encironment, and the industry. Hell, EVs are already evolving to get higher distances per charge, and modular celled batteries, so you can replace a singe bad cell instead of having to replace the entire battery. They're also working on recyclable and reworkable batteries, but the fewer people who buy and invest capital into EVs, the less money there will be for improvement.

 

To be fair, the batteries we already use in ICE vehicles already have that problem, and unlike EVs, no one seems to be taking serious steps to recovering them or improving them much.

 

are you saying flooded lead acid batteries have these same problems? most metal recycling yards take those without a problem. but try getting any of those same yards to take a lithium pack...

Well over 90% of a battery is actually recyclable. It is all about market forces. When it becomes industry driven and profitable, there will be a market for recycling ev batteries. We are still in the infancy of all this. The irony is it is usually market forces that end up benefitting the environment.

European countries with smaller cars and tighter environmental regulations didn’t change because they wanted to. They had to. Scarcity of resources forced much higher gas prices several decades ago, resulting in smaller, more economical cars. Similar thing with smaller houses in many parts of Europe. Less land, less resources. Smaller houses.

We just aren’t quite there yet but it’s coming.

 

You know what’s interesting?
The TPPF that did the study.
Care to guess where they get most of their funding?

lol. really gives you pause for thought on who the 'smart' people really are.. i never went to college-- i would've thrown something at a professor, assuming i could not get bored long enough to try to learn anything in the first place.

at the height of the pandemic, when everyone was gloving/masking up, i happened to end up in front of an overly-concerned person at a stop light. i saw movement in my mirror, and ended up with entertainment while waiting for the light to change. while we waited at the light i watched this gloved and masked person very carefully fully unwrap a candy bar with his gloved hands, then proceed to transfer between his gloved hands, and then move his mask only enough to allow for small bites, while making sure to put the mask up while chewing.

later that week, a postal worker called into a radio station i had playing on the jobsite, they were talking about who does what safety stuff to deal with the virus. the postal worker proudly called in and stated "as soon as i get to work, i put on a set of gloves and a mask, and i don't remove them until i can throw them in my trash at home!". the radio station personalities congratulated her for being safe...

if most people can't understand substance transfer at it's most basic level, my expectations for the same group of people to understand anything beyond a pretty chart that was put together by a company that's financed by corporations that stand to gain the most by not adopting ev's is somewhere between 'low' to 'nil'...

 

I read a different article about Toyoda the other day. The only thing of note, his comments come after he stepped down as chairman.

 

It was a lot more economical to use horses than internal combustion engines for a long time too. It's just a matter of time before EV's in some form replace internal combustion engines. I'm not sure the current versions of EV's will win out. And at 65 I'm not sure I'll live long enough to own one. But change is coming.

 

i've always considered hybrids to be a much better stepping stone to ev adoption. they better utilize the current infrastructure with room to grow later. they're not as ideal, but small steps instead of large leaps.

 

Remember when cordless drills came out 40 years ago, and now.
