Mine sounds just like this and it’s not all the time. That’s the big thing to note. Correct me if I’m wrong, but I don’t think they are in cleaning cycle just because they are at idle. I have times when the truck sounds like a diesel at idol and sometimes it’s less noisy at idle.

I only started noticing it because my mechanic brought it to my attention so as far as I'm concerned it's always been sounding like that. I also just stopped a few times today coming back from the gym to see if it was consistent and it's not. The knock/tick is always there just louder sometimes but again, I can't tell if it's happening as I'm driving because well.... I'm in the truck. It's going in Monday morning to have them document it, will follow up here with their conclusion (but it's a dealer so pretty sure I'll get the cannot reproduce or cannot replicate response).

Working at a dealer and hearing these almost every day, that’s just what these trucks sound like. I have only seen a couple of these noises end up being something actually wrong. Most recently it was a lifter completely missing brand new from the factory. I mean, just not installed at all right from the assembly line. Even then, it didn’t make the noise all the time. It was extremely strange. Truck was only a few weeks old. Otherwise, they are just loud. My 2003 Suburban with 210k miles is quieter than my 2021 Tacoma. It’s annoying.

I was going to suggest this, compare it to a another '21. But maybe do it in person to get a good comparison. Maybe the dealer has a comparable truck you can listen to.

That’s what my 23 sounds like. But the OP’s truck has this faint knock added in with the “diesel like clatter”

Appreciate all the replies. Welp like I expected, Toyota service just called and said the knock is normal (even after I stressed it sounded much louder than my previous 2 Tacomas and what you guys said here I even referenced). Had them note it on my records and that was that. I will also bring it to their attention next oil change just to be re-assured. So f it... case closed.
