It's not just the materials, it's the time and the knowledge to be able to create something that defines the price.

 

Understood, but to find 2" thick Pecan slabs that are 18" and flat and dry costs a lot of money!

 

I have no doubt when you are completely finished that a table like that in the right retail market would be worth north of 6-8k, maybe 10 or 11k in downtown fancytown. But always remind yourself what somebody is asking $ and what they are getting are often two different neighborhoods.

Case in point, a coworker of mine welded up some patio furniture two chairs and a loveseat out of nice stainless. His welds are beautiful and over done. Super solid items. He's got over $1500 in material alone, not counting labor. He's wanting 3k and hasnt gotten any nibbles. He doesnt have the fancy pants retail market so they are only worth what someone will give him, which is far less than he has in them.
I enjoy having these discussions, perceived value vs intrinsic.

 

Which is the reason I am not selling. I am building for internal consumption.

Anytime you personally build something, your labor, materials, etc, cannot compete with mass production. Finding a buyer for a niche piece, even though it’s stunning, is an uphill battle.
Doing it for your self satisfaction is a great accomplishment and if you were able to even break even, then it’s a win in my opinion.
I do the same thing..



I do it for fun. To try and sell these would be 3 or 4 times the shelf prices of others.
