:pccoffee:  sixtys/wannabes/winterizers. I hoovered up a metric buttload of leaves Saturday in anticipation of the rain; figured they were much easier to pick up while they were still dry. Cold weather has finally arrived here too, a bit late for great leaf peeping though. Colors were muted this year.

Our water heater chose Friday to bite the dust, yay. Amazingly I found TWO people willing to come out and take a look after my own troubleshooting attempts came up short. The first one worked for a large regional plumbing/heating outfit; big enough to use a call center, to give you some idea. Online reviews ranged from 1 to 5 stars as usual but there were quite a few 1 star ratings, mostly griping about high prices, upselling, and pressure sales. Sure enough the guy did minimal troubleshooting before telling me I needed a new unit. The price wasn't quite a gouge but was more like the cost of a fresh new install instead of a much simpler replacement job. He was a nice guy though, and he wasn't the one setting the price, so I thanked him and sent him on his way. The second guy was more of a mom/pop sized outfit and, amazingly, offered to come out on Saturday! He was familiar with our unit (Bosch tankless), found the problem, and got us up and going again. However the unit is quite old and isn't working at its peak anymore. I could try a few more fixes on my own and probably get another year or two out of it, but it honestly doesn't owe us anything at this point so we're getting a new one.

That's how they scheduled me too. But my first eye wasn't happy after two weeks so we pushed the second eye out until it improved enough for me to feel comfortable with it.

Speaking of cataracts, my wife's cataract surgery has been postponed. She wants to get the fancy lenses but has some astigmatism which would ordinarily disqualify her. They're going to do a procedure to correct the astigmatism, which may or may not improve her eyes enough to be able to get the fancy lenses, but will improve her vision nevertheless. We let that settle for a bit, reassess, then do the cataracts. Probably early next year at this point.

    18 degrees...

Not that it matters to me anymore, but I've always wondered why there hasn't been a move to change Halloween from the end of the month (BRRRR!) to the beginning of the month (YAY!!) so the kids don't freeze their butts off and have to wear coats over their costumes.

:rain: Good Morning Porch Pals & Sue! Pretty breezy 42* this morning, and likely within a degree of the high! Right above the heater setpoint in the greenhouse, so I will have to go bump it a little to check it out. Going to need jeans today, not shorts! But was planning on that anyway, since I have to put stuff back on the shelf in the garage. I'm going to make my microwave lasagne tonight, otherwise a good day for not much of nuthin'!

    Go Lions!

Well, welcome to the porch! Oh, yeah. HAPPY BIRTHDAY!

Years and years ago, the first microwave we ever bought had a great(ish) cookbook! The best thing in it was the Lasagna! Cook the burger, mix the sauce, and start layering stuff. Easy! Half hour from now, this will be done - in the nuke! Leftovers for a week for us!

Nothing major or fancy. Just stuff to make it work better for me. Running boards, seat covers, BakFlip
Happy almost November. I finished my freezer meat this morning with a little buck that's been hanging around our orchard. The orchard is old...put in by my Grandparents in the 20s...but it still bears enough fruit for the windfalls to attract deer. It attracts bears and cats too but I don't encourage them to hang around. It has a little creek that runs just above it so if a guy waits sooner or later something wanders through.
The freezer is full, the smokehouse is full, now it's time to work on the hides. Hardly any of our people know how to work a deer hide anymore. My eldest daughter and I put on a class last weekend and the turnout and interest was enough to schedule another. My wife used to be the one to teach the younger people but she died in '21 so now it's up to us I guess.
It was good to see how many people are still interested in some of the old ways...they just need somebody to get them started.

And that's all the dent we made! Might actually have to freeze some.
