My Pioneer head unit allows you to activate the camera from the screen. It’s great while pulling a trailer too.

Thanks, I was trying to use the stock screen in rear view mirror because I have an aftermarket deck and cb radio in dash so not room for a deck with screen

After posting it dawned on me that you likely had the in mirror screen.

It worked like that out of the box? Do you have a link to that HU?

I use the kit from Anytime Backup Camera: https://www.anytimebackupcamera.com/

I have it on two of my Tacoma's and on my Tundra. Very convenient for monitoring my trailer on the go.

Mine is a 4 year old Pioneer DMH 1500NEX. It’s hooked into the backup camera. You go to the menu and select camera under AV.
I also got the module that hooks into the OBD port and gives me a fair amount of engine info and tire pressure etc..

Awesome, thank you guys. In the old days, when I was only a little old :) ...you could get adapters to go from the "standard" back of the aftermarket radio into your factory wiring harness. Is that still a thing, or am I going to have to cut off plugs and splice every single wire? And as far as the factory backup camera...still plug and play? (assuming those adapter harnesses still exist)

Any insight on where to start looking for such a thing, if it's available, for either the AVH or the DMH or both?

Thanks again...been looking for a way to activate the rear while going forward...and possibly add a front camera in the future.

Interesting. Please elaborate. Who makes it? Happy with it? Etc.

It’s called the iDatalink Maestro RR Interface Module.
I purchased it all at Crutchfields in Charlottesville Va. They also did the installation.
I have been very happy with it.
