After balancing my D/S and getting it aligned with the rear differential I spun the the aft differential with my hand, back wheels in the air, it wasn't smooth nut a bit chatter and mild grinding. This had a bit of brass metal last fluid change. Should I be looking deeper?

YESSSS! Not normal. Can't remember ever seeing brass in a differential. That is odd. That said, I have never rebuilt a Toyota diff, only Ford gm and dana. Maybe a brass disk or bushings in the clutche assy if it is lsd

I thought i read early models had true lsd. Still new to this site and didn’t realize where to view the model details for each poster

Yes, some models had a clutch style LSD.
Mainly the ones before “Auto LSD” feature (you see the button).

I can say with certainty the TRD Sport on 07 has clutch LSD (especially between certain years)
I cannot speak for the base models.

Yes look deeper. Is it making noise when driving it at speed?
There should be no metal suspended in the diff oil. Are you sure it was brass?

Not at speed -Had a slight rumble coasting after letting off the brakes from a start got much better after a new carrier bearing and u joints and D/S balance. maybe the pinnion bearing? and with off road e rated tires can be hard to really see what it could be.
