I have this vibration and hum coming through the steering wheel. Things I have done to eliminate possibilities. Drained rear gear oil, old fluid was not contaminated, replaced with synthetic (I have had several rear ends go over the years, definitely not a rear gear noise), checked transmission fluids for contamination, it is all good.

I might add the noise been going on for awhile. When on the freeway at speed, if I wiggle the steering wheel slightly side to side there is and immediate change in the vibration and hum. So, I jacked up each side and spun the wheels, passenger side was virtually quiet, driver side some slight noise.

It is an easy fix to replace, wondering if I should do both sides even though only one side is bad?

Truck has 264,000 miles, totally oil leak free, well maintained with service records, runs like new. I don't want the bearing to seize, no bueno...not going to pay dealer for fix, you wouldn't believe their quote...

So, both sides or just the failed one?

I did one side and the other failed in 20k

Fairly easy to replace them once you get the axle nut socket if you have 4x4, remove ABS sensor first

Two wheel drive 6 lug Prerunner, mucho easier than 4 wheel version (don't have to remove sensor), remove wheel, disassemble brake caliper, remove rotor, then four bolts, struggle a bit to remove, then reassemble, EZ peasey....

    That’s pretty much it:thumbsup:
The hub bolts are 17mm. You’ll need a wrench for those.
I used blue loctite on them when reinstalling.

Took about an hour+, smooth as glass. Believe it or not, a slight whine started May of last year while driving to Yellowstone. So about 1.5 years it survived, the last couple of months it got measurably louder and I was worrying about bearing melt and disaster. Toyota dealer is a three block walk, got only one, will get another when I feel like bending over again, bringing soap next time.

It is my work truck, couldn't wait.
