    Congrats!
First time out, what's better than that.
Little advice, when you do stop, at least get near a tree.
It will help to conceal you as well as using the tree to stabilize your weapon.

Self processing is the way I fly.
After you do a couple, it becomes second nature. You'll know the cuts. Anyone you know that can mentor you with the actual processing?
Yeah it's work, but more rewarding and you know what you end up with.
If you go that route, invest in a good vacuum sealer.

Someone asked me about the wildfires in VA. couldnt find the post. one started yesterday about 10 minutes from the house. not contained but burning up the mountain toward Blue Ridge Parkway which is Federal,,.goverment allows no cutting or anything on NP system so if gets on the park they may let it burn and use airlift water and retardants.no houses are in harms way. Thanks everyone!

ha, yea I'm aware concealing myself would normally be better. I was just still working my way over to where I was planning to set up when I heard him, and I figured if I could hear him he would probably hear me crunching leaves and sticks to get hidden. Thankfully it doesn't take much stabilization to hit a target at 15 yards with a rifle.

Unfortunately nobody around me anymore that I know of that hunts to provide guidance, so I'm working off lots of reading, internet guides, and youtube videos. Nobody in my family hunts, and all my friends and coworkers that do hunt live in other states, mostly on the opposite side of the country now.

If you want to prepare for next season the absolute best time to scout is Feb-March. All of the seasons are over, the buck sign is generally still there, plus its just a great time of year to walk around in the woods.

Finally made it back over to the mountain to hang a camera, cut out tree limbs blocking the trail, and put up posted signs. Then found these, this tree is almost dead and hasn’t had more than a few on it in the last 10 years, absolutely loaded this year.

Still not full on rut here in Central Florida despite the cooler temps this weekend. Rifle season opened Sat and I wanted to do some daytime scouting in between sits in an area that usually is standing water in the rainy season. Hunting this close to large waterways can be dangerous-gators and now pythons have been found in my county so walking in in the dark in knee deep water can be nerve wracking. I found lots of good sign, recent tracks, few scrapes and rubs. Tried to slip in there this morning, wind changed on me and turkeys busted me up before I could get close.

5.56 62gr Barnes Vor-TX. He was quartering towards me, so I aimed just in front of the shoulder to make sure I didn't get into the guts but still passed through the lungs.

Been there and done that sans the pythons. Nothing quite makes you draw up as seeing an 8’ gator slide off into the water as you wade waist deep across a slough.

We went back to N.C. Saturday afternoon to try to get our daughter one, she wanted to go with me to the food plot so my wife and our son went to where we doubled up last Saturday.

Wife text me and ask if Cole could shoot a doe, I said as long as it's big I don't care. He's never shot one, it was early so he drilled her. She went 60 yards and crashed.

Hour later another doe came out with a buck not far behind, my wife shot it.

Our daughter was getting ancy, she and I finally saw a doe about 10 minutes before dark, she ask could she shoot, I said I don't care.

Her muzzle loader didn't go off, only the cap. Deer stood there, I handed her my gun.

When she shot the gun knocked her down in the blind, she just turned 8 and is only 68 pounds, I felt bad for her but she's shot before and had no problems.

We found a little blood from her deer but never found it, I hope it made it. I'm gonna take her back Friday afternoon and see if she can get one. We've put 5 in the freezer in a week and don't have any freezer room. Luckily the processor takes donations and will give a person who needs meat some for free.

When we went to the processor this guy was there, I know him. He killed him about 1/2 a mile from where I shot one with a drop tine 20 years ago.

We use 209 primers for shotshells, not the ones for muzzle loaders, also cleaned all 4 of our muzzle loaders before we went hunting. I use a drill bit to clean the breach plug and a torch tip cleaner for the tiny hole. My wife's didn't go off either, she had to use Cole's. Mine delayed last week, the joys of using muzzle loaders :D

I hunted a guys stand once across from my parents where we had permission, I got to looking around and found his old muzzle loader. It was rusted really bad and the barrel was bent. The scope was still attached. It didn't go off on a big buck and he beat it up against the tree and threw it in the woods :rofl::rofl:
