Drove a Tundra double cab today. I liked it. The screen and cameras are super nice. Biggest downsides were visibility isn't quite as good as Ford, and neither is seat comfort (though maybe they need to wear in a bit). Back seat area isn't as usable as the Ford either, but it's tolerable.

Toyota's allocation process is pretty funny. They said they basically need to submit allocation requests over and over again until one lines up. With a truck like I want, it'll probably take them several allocation request attempts to get one. They said best case is two months if somehow it only took one request to get one. Worst case could be 5+. He suggested putting a deposit down and trying for the first request in early January in order for it to arrive in spring or summer. He said everything he sees that matches what I want is already reserved right now, and the only one on a lot is 500 miles away.

He was trying to talk me into leasing it instead of buying since I tend to buy a new truck every 3-4 years. Said miles don't matter if I buy it out or take out a new lease and it would probably be cheaper overall. I'm not familiar with leasing, but that'd be a tough sell for me - I hate that it wouldn't technically be mine.

I feel like you still pay that 11 cent per mile over the lease, just with the new lease you would get it worked into the new lease and be none the wiser

That's kind of what I thought too. I'd have to research. Highly unlikely that I'd lease anyway.

With the miles you drive I can't see a lease being wise, though it has benefits for some. My mother leased a Honda CRV a few years ago because she needed something quickly that was AWD and wasn't sure how she would like a SUV as she always drove cars prior. She put 11K on the vehicle in 3 years.

Right, I average 23k per year. I've never heard of a lease being feasible with that kind of mileage. He said buy-out on the truck after 3 years would likely be around 42k based on leases they've done for trucks with similar sticker prices. I'd have to amortize it out, but on a 5-year note, no way would I owe that after 3 years. Not that the loan would even probably be that high to start given my truck's value, but I'm ignoring that for comparison's sake. Granted, I'm sure the payment is lower to make up for it, but it's got to be pretty low to make up for having no equity after three years.

What model Tundra are you looking for? I watched a YouTube video a couple days ago and they were at a dealer out west that had a shitload of Tundras on the lot.

My dad leased a vehicle with unlimited mileage. I don't hear of that too often. The company he leased it from later tried to claim there was a limit, but luckily he still has the original paperwork.

Even if the payment is lower (which it is), in your case you'll get socked for a lot at the end for going over miles. No way it makes sense.

My mom's situation it was more feasible but she doesn't go anywhere, just needed AWD suddenly. Being on dialysis she has to get there no ifs/ands/buts.

My neighbor likes to take vehicles from here and flip them in South America. The last couple were in decent shape, but this thing is swiss cheese in and out.

He says if you buy it out or go for another lease, there's no mileage penalty. But that locks me into both options. I'd have to jump through hoops to buy it and then trade it elsewhere if I want something non-Toyota next time around.

And buying it out seems like an awful way to go in terms of length - 3 year lease + probably 5 year finance = 8 Years Paying on a truck.

Probably related to the same crew that bought my 93 and sent them to Central / South America. When I was looking for my truck I'd come across them from time to time. If the truck was being sold on CL for a steal with issues listed in MA I'd see it 2-3 days later for triple the price with all the issues magically not listed (like a 3.0L with an overheating problem) so I'm sure they're trying to flip their product here if they can before they sent them abroad.

I was in Maine this weekend for a night sans kids and had my Mom's Forester. We let my MIL use the Jeep since it was easier with the car seats and there's no way my truck would fit in a hotel garage (with a 6-5 height limit) nor would I think about letting them valet it. She had the adaptive cruise on the Subaru and I used it for the first time. It's pretty neat, but I found it quite abrupt in acceleration and deceleration and I still never quite trusted it. Are other makes just as abrupt in their inputs? I get that it's really neat and I'm sure over time I'd use it, but I think this is the first time I've turned cruise control on in a vehicle since high school when I had it for the first time. I'm not sure the Vette or Tacoma's cruise control even works.

There’s a residual value after leasing. You would then need to pay that for an additional few years or whatever. I think I got that right

Now if you kept the truck 20 years that's one thing. Granted few will do that, but my mom would be the rare exception. I forget if she financed or outright paid the residual after the 3 yrs. I told her to buy it no matter what as with that low mileage she could just resell it versus getting nothing extra from the dealer. Sadly someone not here legally with no license or insurance totalled that vehicle.

    This.

Another note ,who knows much about lawn tractors? I have a good sized oil leak on mine and trying to decide if worth even getting it looked at after the season or just going new.

So, clearly, back from my isolation(road trip, cruise vaca)...

I've never had a vacation before. I mean a proper one.
Until this, every Leave or Vaca was for TCB...
All in all, this was an... epic experience for us. There will be another next year(we already have thr line up, though not released publicly yet), and she said we are going.....
This was the longest I've gone without logging into anything, and it was great.
First time on a ship this size, and first time not having a job to do...
First night, I hadn't slept like I had in years.
We did come back one short unfortunately. But, nothing can be done for that now.

I need to do this vacation thing more....

Right, he said residual would likely be around 42k. That's probably about what I'd be financing to start if I just bought the truck. Seems crazy to still have 42k left after having something for three years.
