I suppose, but based on my '05 for which I repainted the hood and fenders, other areas will still peel and the "poor man's" fix won't last very long. Not sure you'd be worse off, though. Give it a try.

If they do come through and fix the trucks with the peeling paint I would also push real hard for cash on top of the repairmen though it would be a huge uphill battle. Any paint work is going to cause a decrease in value whether you trade it in or sell it later.

No letter yet for me. I called my local dealer who ran my VIN and said nothing showed. I called the number that shows at the top of the Toyota letter people have posted and they said I was covered. I asked if they could email me something, they said no. I hope I get a letter. I am mad enough with my little door frame spot that I am thinking of getting rid of my truck. I worry about what future paint problems will bring on 2021 OR DCLB. I bought this truck as a retirement gift planning to keep it for a long time.

Called Toyota corporate this morning, customer service rep looked me up and said my VIN was covered under the service program so I started to celebrate. She transferred me to financial to take care of reimbursement since I’d already paid out of pocket for the repair. Financial kept asking for an account number, I don’t have a loan so nothing I could give them, and they couldn’t take the case number.

So I call the main number back looking for help. I get forwarded to a higher level rep who promptly tells me my VIN isn’t covered and can’t explain why the other rep said it was. The program starts with vehicles manufactured in Nov 2015, mine was March. I asked for consideration, asked to submit my photos, etc, she basically told me I was wasting my time until the program expands to include my VIN. Not happy with the up and down experience but the end result is what I was expecting anyway. Apparently not enough 2nd Gen owners have complained but enough 3rd Gen owners have. If you are a 2nd Gen owner with this issue PLEASE open a case with Toyota so they have the volume of complaints to add to the service program.

Love the thought process on this one.

In your mind, fixing the paint issue will decrease the value trade-in / sell value. Do you think leaving the paint flake alone to progressively deteriorate the trucks paint will increase the truck's value?

Toyota already is working on a fix. For some people here, no matter what Toyota does, it's a lose - lose scenario.

What he’s saying is that Toyota’s compensation does not make the owner whole, if there is an impact to resale value. It may be solid point. I doubt Toyota will do anything other than repaint the areas peeling. Which is worthy of celebration in and of itself. I don’t know if a repaint shows up on CARFAX and if it does what the impact is on value.

    The repainting won't impact value.

The Customer Support 23TE08 program is specific, but don't give up if you're not covered yet. Toyota's ZKG program gradually included more and more models that were not covered initially. The more people that file cases, the better the chance Toyota will expand the program. Call Toyota Brand Engagement Center at 800-331-4331 and tell them you need to "open a case." They will take the information and assign a case manager. Before you do that, go to your local Toyota dealer and have them write up estimates and submit them to Toyota. I actually went to 2 dealerships starting in Sept 2022, and had them go through the process of filing a claim - they sent my Tacoma to the paint shop and wrote up repair estimates which included photos of the peeling paint, so the Case Manager had something to reference. Of course my claims were denied until now.
