:pccoffee: Good Morning Porch Pals & Sue! Looks like haircut day for the potted plants. Stripping truck parts for painting is on a planning hold.

Small world. I was born and raised in Oakland and before I moved here to Elk Grove 10 years ago I lived in Fremont for close to 30 years. You wouldn’t recognize Fremont and the rest of the Bay Area now a days. Also been to the coliseum and Cow Palace numerous times to see groups over the years. Last group I saw at the Cow Palace was Fleetwood Mac, and last I saw at the Coliseum was (I think) was Bob Seger.

Well, look what I spied sticking out of the bumper, while we were getting groceries from the car.

    Afternoon all:

As always, some pretty neat car pics. Kurt, the rear end on that green car pic. is pretty nice also!

    What else can go wrong:annoyed:!
My buddy had the scope on a bruiser buck this morning waiting for it to come close enough for a shot when all of a sudden it starts blowing and takes off in the opposite direction, WTH, here come two hikers down the hiking trail that it had spotted, needless to say he hates hikers being in the woods on state game lands during the hunting season, he often talked about this happening, well it happened, and they even waved at him when they saw him!!! :annoyed::smack:

    Plant based activity.....

Haircuts, part 1. Everyone has to fit within the limits of the pot edge, to fit in the greenhouse. This encourages a little more bushy new growth, which is good. Everyone got part 1 today.

    20231106_121024.jpg
    20231106_123729.jpg

Part 2. Most of the pots are all root ball. Step one is the machette, to trim and get the dirt off. Step two is use the trimmer to get closer around the base of the plant. Then, they get new soil, and cypress mulch to cover. One done, 14 more to go! Usually, this is every 2 years, or for a few in smaller pots. Unless you were lazy last year......

And wife had no faith in my getting little Christmas Cactus from Amazon. Our beauty did not like the summer, or the greenhouse. Everyone says they are selling them, but they lie! So, amazingly, I got three nice little pots that looked like this today.

    Now, please turn into this!

Small lift, slightly oversized tires, well...
They were probably proud of themselves for saving the deer's life.

That would not fly well here unless they are dressed in orange. During deer gun season every one has to be wearing 80% orange in field. no exceptions, they are subject to fines.

OK, first for blooming, and they do vary by color. Our big one got put in the dark corner of the greenhouse as soon as I insulated for winter. So, only about a month and half to make it look like the pic. We just screwed it up this summer - it will recover.
    Internet says
What is the secret to getting a Christmas cactus to bloom?
    images_4c7e21490d1e43542abbe65320a2004a3da71513.jpg

To encourage bud set, provide bright light, temperatures between 55 F and 65 F, and 13 hours or more of continuous darkness each day. For flowers during the winter holiday season, long nights should be started in late September or October and continued for eight weeks.

Can you propogate? By all means, but it's a gentle process. I like sticking stuff in dirt! But can be done. From a Mastergardener look up:

Christmas Cactus Guide: How to Propagate Christmas Cactus - 2023 - MasterClass

They come in lots of colors. We got a handout sheet with these new ones, that says the color can be changed by the environment they are kept in. Too much to type.

Short story for this year, keep it in the dark a bunch, and propogate those long branches after the holiday!

My wife says the cactus looks overwatered and is probably in too small a pot. To get it to bloom at Christmas she gives it plant food (Miracle Grow house plant food), very little, ten drops in a gallon of water which she uses to water all her plants in October. We have several of the plants and some will bloom more than once a year.

You can start them by placing a fresh fallen leaf in damp soil, but most of them will die. They are difficult to start that way. You can also put a branch in water and see if it will generate roots, but there again most will die. If it gets roots you need to plant it before it gets waterlogged and starts to rot.

it was LOOONG ago that I would go on "hunts" with my neighbor friend and his dad - well before large scale Orange use. But if you were out there without something visible, no hunter in Michigan would be held liable! Can't speak for PA., but I imagine no difference!

Been a hunter my whole life. Mostly hunt waterfowl and pheasant now. Back problems make it tough for me to hunt deer. (I miss it) . During deer rifle season I only venture into the woods when I’m hunting. If I’m not hunting I’m not going into the woods in deer season. I use to be a hunter safety instructor and heard lots of hunting accident stories from students and other instructors. . Made me a little “gun shy”. I’ve seen dumb ass hikers stomping around the woods during rifle season and they were oblivious that it was deer season.
