I wouldn’t want one for long trips but it would be perfect for around town or for construction fleet vehicles.

    100%. Trading a 2015 Taco on a new Gen3 back in 2018 was a solid play. Or 2020+.

After a couple years in, Gen3 had not only worked out most of its significant early problems, but you also got more features:
    2017- power rear glass
2018- additional safety features, new grills
2020- CarPlay/Android Auto, LED’s, power seats, new wheels & grills, suspension upgrades on Pro

Whether it’s fixing the inevitable early bugs, avoiding price increases + shameless dealer gouging, or just hedging that Toyota will add desirable features later, recent history shows that Gen4 makes a compelling case to hold off a year or two.

Helps that people buying up the last Gen3’s in November already know that they have a rock-solid V6 truck that’ll still be a resale champ when (if) they want to pull the trigger on a Gen4 later.

That was the dilemma. Her Isuzu Trooper finally died and wasn’t worth fixing. Wife’s commute is 3 miles round trip, she is always hauling a ton of big boxes and printing equipment. Could have bought an econo box car, but a truck or van serves her better. She hates cars anyways. One of those city vans would have been perfect, but no AWD. She is from the South no experience in driving in the snow, run studded snow tires on the 1st Gen it is like driving on Velcro. Already had the old truck, with a bad engine, so we decided put in a new engine, instead of a new vehicle. We almost bought a RAV4 which kinda works for her needs, but rather save the money, she hates spending money on “dumb” cars.

That IMV 0 truck with a canopy would be perfect. Even if it would cost $25K to get 4WD, hvac, and a canopy, still a great deal.

I'm curious what will happen to Gen 2 values after the Gen 4 is released.

Currently, the 1GR-FE is held in higher regard (in some cases significantly higher regard) than the 2GR-FKS and this almost single handedly pumps up Gen 2 values by quite a bit.

But if the fanbase falls in love with the iForce max, Gen 2 is going to finds itself on the clearance racks real quick.

My guess that once people drive the 4G and have some decent bottom end power there is going to be an exodus from the 2G/3G crowd, the used market will be flooded. Have been waiting decades for a decent “truck” engine. 1G still kinda holds value because of its size. Drove mine to the grocery store last night, I am so over that truck, find it quite uncomfortable compared to my 3G. Sure the 4G is going to make up the little nagging issues I have with the 3G. I am sure many will follow suit. Dealer mark ups and wait times are going to be insane for the 4G.

That's how I feel driving my 5th gen 4Runner for a week then back to my 2nd gen tacoma... it's night and day different. The taco doesn't feel or drive as nice as the 4Runner. The 4Runner suspension setup is almost exactly like the new 4th gen Taco so I can guess the ride will be smooth and uncompromising too. Power wise the 4G Taco blows the 4Runner out of the water...that includes the mpg when they post it officially.

Time will tell, but unlike 1GR/2GR, iForce Max will be a premium (read: expensive) option, with the majority of Gen4’s motivated by basic 4cyl turbos. So the real Gen2-3-4 drivetrain comparisons will be sixes vs boosted 4’s, and as we’ve already seen, that debate is polarizing.

Personally I wouldn’t spend too much time splitting hairs: all generations are highly desirable, reliable & competent trucks, so safe bet the Tacoma resale streak will live on, although we’ll have to see the affect that used turbos will have on the market in a few years.

Short term, Gen3 & Gen2 values will probably slip some, just b/c they’ll represent a large bulk of trade-ins on Gen4. After those trades get absorbed into the used market, it’ll stabilize. Hopefully for all of us, the overly-enthusiastic don’t run out and give away their Gen2-3 trucks. But a lot of them inevitably will bend over for their dealer & later complain here how “Gen3 resale values suck…”

I sure have changed over the years, used to be that trucks need to ride like trucks! Now seeking out comfort and convenience.

My 1G rides like a brick compared the 3G, granted I have OME heavies on it when it had the Wildernest. Wife mainly drives it, told her I could tune the suspension to ride better, take out the add-a-leaf in the rear pack, and change out the front springs. She said not to bother, said the rough ride keeps her awake. lol!

All the NA sixxer holdouts need to do is drive the turbo 4. Have test driven the Bronco and the Ranger, I am sold. Just need Toyota to hurry up and bring theirs to market. Don’t quite trust the Ford’s, but do Toyota.

They are, just like transmissions on the Big 3, plus their engine failures. Some of the new Broncos and Rangers are having engine failures. Buddy’s F150 v6 ecoboost just took a shit.

One thing with Toyota is, they fix their products. Big 3 tend to tell you to go pound sand.

Read that thread. Toyota is not playing nice with everyone.

Just seems like a handful of effective trucks. In the past Toyota went above and beyond with frame replacement’s that were well out of warranty, and the head gaskets on the 3 point slooow.

Ford never did a thing when my old F250 frame broke in half because of rust. Or the endless power steering pumps that thing ate, or engine failures before 100K.

These are problems happening at only 10-30K miles though.
