    So, this stupid thing,

broke off the front bed rail of my Tacoma. I had to remove the tonneau today and noticed it was sheered.

This site, https://www.ifixit.com/Guide/Tonneau+Trifold+Bed+Cover+Retention+Pin+Replacement/104020 has a how to replace which includes the only pictures of what mine looks like. Note, it's very easy to replace I just linked to that so you can see what a broken one looks like.

It makes putting the tonneau back on easier and I don't plan to take the tonneau off soon.

I don't know when it broke and I couldn't find any broken parts.

Fortunately, replacements are available either on Ebay or at some dealers. The on line parts site says it's discontinued, which makes no sense.

So, I'll be able to get a replacement. The bad news is that most of my tools are on a moving truck and I won't have them until close to the end of the month.

Oh boy am I in the game now...
Truck buying...Started pitting dealers against each other...You can quickly identify who is working with you vs who is now pissed you're eating away at their grifter add ons...Especially offering me "Almost exactly what you wanted..." With over $2K in options I don't want...Why would I pay $40k for an access cab with that NAV System and a $1K dealer markup when I've got another dealer willing to sell me a Quad cab in the color I want for 2K cheaper...
So I ask them to send me over some builds in their inventory (en route) and It's incredibly frustrating that EVERY truck on their website is sold...all the available trucks are behind this shield wall and only available if you have the guest link...

The HARDEST thing in car sales is getting ass-in-seat in the dealership. From there, it's a lot more likely they'll have a sale. They're going to make it exceptionally difficult to get information without going into the physical dealership arena, because now you're on THEIR turf.

    pssst.....Check out the frontier :spy:

    You went in.

They sorted out what you want.

And then told you that you can't have it.

    :notsure:

I don't know about the MT/AT options on the Frontier, but I'd at least go give it a whack if you're off the MT need already.

So the M/T was a necessity with the 4cyl....There was ZERO issue downshifting and getting the movement I needed out of that engine...
    If I'm going V6 there's no need. I don't drive with a heave foot..
Driving the automatic Honda Fit for a month...boy is it nice to be able to sip the coffee and drive...

Oh and if you thought a taco had a little engine...try a fit :)

I tried the dealer with the guy I used to know working there. He went silent after the first email. I get the impression he didn't want to deal with trying to get a specific truck.

The other dealer, which is actually closer to home for me, was pretty good. I went in because they had a truck that was about as close as I'll probably find to see in person. They were definitely hoping I'd just buy that one - they were willing to do $4k under sticker on it. But they were willing to explore the allocation request option once they realized I wanted something super specific. They're going to contact me at the beginning of January (I want it to show up when the winter is over) to take a $500 deposit, verify specs, and agree to a price. We didn't get into pricing too much. He said he can't do $4k off on a special request like mine due to the extra work involved, but he should be able to knock some off sticker - and that the owner is adamant that they never sell for more than MSRP.

I sold Toyota's many years ago but I don't think much has changed in the way they do business. Some manufacturers will sell you exactly what you want, you just need to place an order and wait. Toyota does not work that way. They will send their vehicles equipped with certain packages in typical configurations. It can be helpful if you check either online(sometimes it is very difficult to decipher how vehicles are equipped online) or in person to discover how they are typically sending their vehicles. Looking at the price sticker on the window is the most accurate way. Once you figure out how a truck is likely to come equipped you can negotiate a little easier because you will not be asking for a vehicle equipped in a way that is not possible to buy. I know, as a customer you should be able to buy exactly what you want and not pay for crap you do not want. While true that will not help the bottom line as the dealer will still own the truck for whatever the base price and options(shipping, etc.) are. They may tell you that they are taking off the cost of the options that you do not want but if they are on the truck then the dealer is still paying for them. Any price reduction they give in order to "give you what you want to earn your business" is really just the dealer taking off profit to get you to buy.

When I bought my 2014 I did not speak to a salesperson at any dealership until I showed up to pick up the truck. At the dealership I purchased at I dealt with the "Internet Sales Person" exclusively until we had struck a deal. I only went to the dealership to see the truck when it came off the delivery truck and to pick it up.

I would caution you regarding the dealership you mention above. Often if dealers have nothing to sell then they have nothing to negotiate about so they will give you promises and tell you what they think you want to hear since they have no agreement and have nothing they have to live up to. They know that when they have a real vehicle to sell the negotiations will really start and they do not have to live up to anything that was said before.

Considering I just sent the same truck, new, is 40k...I'd take that :)

Costs have gone bananas the past couple years. My same exact truck that I paid 36 + TTL is now 41.7 + TTL. DCSB 4x4 TRD OR without any additional packages.

The only thing to watch out for (not that Brian does a lot of stupid shenanigans like I do) is if you want to do skids, sliders, the whole bit - the aftermarket scene for the frontiers is a LOT smaller.

This guy found one heading to another dealer and printed it and asked if that was what I was looking for. It happened to be nearly exact - I think it had one thing I didn't care about. He said it was one another dealer had reserved, but he'd keep it as an example to reference a future allocation request off of. He did say the allocation requests sometimes aren't exact matches to what they can get and it was best to list non negotiables and work from there. He'd then let me know if they got a match with all my non negotiables and if the rest (color, options that I didn't specifically request, etc.) was acceptable, they'd get it. He said they can usually request minor changes before it's built, but sometimes they aren't accepted.

If we get to the point where they find something they can get and need a deposit, I intend to get a signed price. I had a signed price at order time on my first F-150. Even if it's MSRP, that's fine, but I won't do the thousands over that many Toyota dealers seem to want. I've read too many stories of people across many makes ordering a unicorn truck, not getting a signed agreement, then the dealer suddenly wants thousands over MSRP because they know they have the only truck like that in a 500 mile radius.
