Second Gen - Wires Through Firewall

If you haven’t had any issues thus far, this may be my golden ticket. Now I’ll have to decide if I route the wiring into the cab near the drivers seat or do it in the back where the grommet is. I’m using GP audio OFC wire and the jacket is fairly thick so I don’t think it would nicked from rocks if I secured it to the upper part of the frame going back.

Where on the inside of the cab does this come out at? How did you get to it? Remove the glove box, like to change the cabin filter?

It comes out sort of up and between the airbox and ECUs in that area. Every time I’ve run cable through that one I remove the gromet then pop a hole in the carpet backing on the firewall. Remove the glovebox. Typically I use a wire coat hanger I had cut and straightened and use that to carefully route my cable. Something more specific for like routing car audio wires is usually better.

 

Very good and thanks for that info. This will help as I prepare for my semi-annual trip to NM and AZ. I'll be using my "tried and trusted" wire coat hanger to run power for a spiltter power supply that will be placed under the P.S. seat.

Like JDev said it's behind the glovebox. I used an X-ACTO knife to cut out the padding/carpet that's behind the grommet. Otherwise you get trapped between. Once I did that and pushed the wire through it was really easy to spot behind the blower with the glove box removed.

 

Thanks for the heads up. Now I know what I'm up against going through that insulation padding.

 

If I remember correctly, the plug thats in there from the factory doesn't work well for wires. I ended up buying a kit like this with the correct size grommet to run the wire through.

 

10-4 by luck I have a few grommets that should work.

 

Wanted to add my 2c since this was a total PITA but I got it done. I poked 2 holes with a flat head screwdriver in the standard firewall, then I taped the plugs to a flathead (the longest I had, not very long) and forced them through. Figuring out the right way to tape it and the right way to push them through was pretty difficult to be honest... but, I got it. I originally followed a youtube video where the guy inserted the wires around the side edge of the firewall grommet, but this was super unsafe since it could cut through the wires and it breaks the seal on the firewall. So I read through this forum and went with the flat head trick-- Thanks to TW. It feels much much safer and cleaner now.
