Unfortunately, we are all at the mercy of whoever is on the assembly line that day. Did they put gear oil in the diff? The correct amount? etc. Is your rear diff bad or is there just good money in it for the stealership to complete warranty repair. Good idea to check all fluid levels when you buy a new truck. Not saying there was low or no gear oil in the OP's truck, just never know unless you ck yourself. Yes, I believe most dealerships have little integrity. My rear does not howl. Just lucky, but I did cycle the oil out early as mentioned on break in.

I had a diff howl and a rear vibe that you could see in my seat on my 2010 Nissan Frontier, as the mileage went up it went away . The vibe never did , and I sold the truck at 155 k miles . When it was new I meant to bring it to the dealer and never got around to it . My point is that , I think the people here bring up stuff sometimes that maybe just maybe we would never pay attention too.I also think people forget that the , Tacoma , Frontier , Colorado , and Ranger are pick up trucks with full frames. These type of vehicles are not meant to ride good , ride quiet , or even be luxurious. The pickup trucks of my young era had no rug , no ac ( most of them ) , no tilt , roll down windows and a Manual on the steering column. When you hit a bump the whole neighborhood would hear it .These days people expect trucks to be luxury cars . Where this is going I have no idea, but my truck right now has more options than luxury 30 years ago .I think people expect too much from these trucks . They want to go off road and yet they want it to ride , handle and be quick like an M series BMW .

Both my 21 and 22 have audible rear end noise with the rear window open at speed. It is what it is.

How much fluid film did you apply to stop your diff from howling? Are we talking gallons or just a light coating?

I've had the howl since day 1 when not under load between 45-55. No explanation from the dealer, etc. Just have let it ride all these years.

The undercoating is applied by a fellow TW member, for a reasonable fee. He does an excellent job. Coats everything but brakes and exhaust. I don't know the volume of product that is applied. He uses a compressor and a spray gun.

i finally got annoyed with mine and sold it. my truck constantly smelling musty from the a/c leaking on the passenger floorboard and the rear axle having excessive runout and toyota refusing to fix it under warranty was the last straw. didn't need a truck anymore anyway. now i get 50 more hp, over 1000 pounds less weight, a stick shift, and 38 mpg.

i planned to drive that truck over 200k miles but i just couldn't deal with these issues for that long.

I don’t blame you. Absolutely bull shit about the water dripping from the a/c I can’t believe they haven’t come up with a fix for that. Shame on them

they kept telling me it was functioning as designed and all cars do it. I've driven dozens of vehicles over the years in high humidity conditions and none of them leaked fluid on the floorboards. so dumb.

ummm, yes they are intended to ride nice, not be rattle traps (or have diffs that ate loud) and are meant to be quite luxurious depending on trim package you get. its no longer 1950.

manufactures love apologist customers like you.

I’m not being an apologist at all . I’ve always looked at a truck as a minimalist vehicle to do work with , carry motorcycles , and go into the woods to hunt , and things like that .My wife has a Lexus that I expect to be luxury. Just the way a pickup truck is built will lead to more noises from areas like the bed and the fact that we have a full frame alone changes things. The manufacturers are out of control with all this stuff they put in trucks, all it does is make them way too expensive. Everyone has there own opinion, but for me I could care less . I make the radio a little louder and continue on . But I guess that’s what keeps people buying a pick up truck for 70 plus k.

trucks stopped being that in the late 90's and have progressivly gotten more and more luxurious since. hell if they were intended to be "minimalist" they would still have straight axles under the front of them. either way they shouldn't have a diff that whines. something is wrong if its making those noises.
