I have one almost as bad. Imagine you sitting in your climbing stand, it's been misting and raining all day. It's almost dark so you lower your rifle to the ground, and get the stand ready to climb down. As you turn around and get ready, you hear the tell tale sound of an animal moving through the leaves. And low and behold an 8 or even a 10 point buck runs right under your stand. It's almost a miracle that he did't get entangled in your rope. YOU, just sit there disgusted that you didn't wait 5 minutes longer before calling it quits. I couldn't tell you how many times over the years, I had similar issues happen to me during hunting season. But I never quit or gave up hunting because of a few minor set backs.
Ya'll keep your powder dry and remember to aim small, miss small.

 

at our hunt land the rut is not happening yet.the young guys that go way up in the mountain are seeing some bucks but thats out of my reach at my age. ive found the does,saw 7 this morning so just a matter of time. never had this issue. there is No Water on the mountain. springs ive never seen dry are dryed up.weve been in a drought. one spring i checked on the mountain was a trickle. 100 yds down stream and no water flowing.calls for some rain Friday. praying ee get some. Never happen with me like that. If it’s been misting and raining all day I dang sure ain’t gonna hear them. Will just turn and there they will be. I used to sit in the stand till after dark longer and longer as the season went. To hear deer slip in after shooting light and move that direction a piece on the next hunt. No bait or trail cameras etc. just trying to cypher things out seat of the pants and get nearer where they may be bedding. Around here that ain’t always obvious, plenty of cover.

I’ve been busted way more with turkeys moving too soon. Years ago I started religiously sitting another ten minutes after my last call before getting up to move. Even used a wrist watch to make sure. Lot of beards to show for that one patient change. Sorry but all things lead back to turkeys with me eventually.

Is that dark part at the top of the photo part of your ground blind. If so, that buck walked right up to you. How far was it when you shot, and congrats on a job well done.
