Found another pic of the blood trail - soon after impact.....zoomed in somewhat and notice the 2 distinct blood lines which are apart from each other - indicating bleeding from both sides of the buck???

NOT TRYING TO CREATE ANY CONFLICT/ARGUMENT, but just realized this.

TOO freakin' windy to hunt today!!!! Marking a timber sale tomorrow, so back out again Saturday (hopefully).

I aint got nothing helpful to say aside from knowing deeply how bad that feeling sucks. Did it two years in a row with my bow. To the point that I’m now just rifle hunting this year and giving myself a whole year to fine tune my bow and my skills.

sorry that happened man. It’s tough and two things are true here. Deer are hardy animals that will survive some wild ass injuries and if they don’t, there’s a plan in place for others in Mother Nature to get an easy meal

    Thanks Dangerdave!!! That helps.

A buddy of mine who has bow hunted for 50 years told me he quit this year after crippling 2 of them this season. One with a compound and one with a crossbow. He said gun hunting only from now on.

While we as hunters want an ethical kill...sometimes stuff happens...ive had bad shots, gut shot, expandibles that didnt expand, unexplained shot where it should have dropped but walked away with a speck of blood! I shot one with crossbow and arrow/bolt stopped dead. Deer didnt even move, just looked up like what was that noise? Watched it walk off with bolt stuck in it:eek: was i mad/dissapointed? Of course!

But stuff can happen even with rifle...or muzzle loader. You just try to do your best to search and practice/ check your equipment.

Mentioned previously that a muscle/brisket hit can bleed like crazy then die after a 100-200 yards. Then there's a pass thru covered end to end with dark blood. This was my son's on Monday when he shot his buck. The deer was completely broadside. He said when he shot, it looked a touch back. There was no blood the first 20-30 yards. Just followed the trail he was on. Around forty yards we found the arrow, covered end to end with dark blood. I was certain it was a liver hit. We had some good blood, plate size spots. Then it was dime size drops. Then maybe a some a bit bigger. After an hour into the trail my son was getting discouraged. I told him remember what the arrow looked like. I mentioned that sometimes even on a pass through the majority of the bleeding is internal. At a 100 yards I'm on my hands and knees, dry tracking and looking at leaves to find blood. Another 50 yards or so, it looked like some of the blood had bubbles. We made it another 20 yards or so, Matt's asking where's the next spot, I can't find anymore. I was getting close to stopping, getting lunch and coming back in a few hours. Looked to my right and pointed, there's the next spot. It was his buck.

He hit just behind the rib cage, bisecting the liver and the back of the far side lung. And as I suspected, when we opened him up, it seemed like a gallon of couagulated blood poured out. Bleeding was mostly internal. He was starting to get stiff so he pretty much died on the run. Maybe a minute or two after being shot.

Patience is the key. In retrospect, when seeing the arrow and blood, we shoulda backed out, waited grabbed something to eat and came back a few hours later.

Have some other blood trail stories, vast majority are good endings, a couple, not so good.

Never quit. Never give up. Ever.

Saw 2 does this morning, nothing this afternoon. The woods are quickly filling up with hunters so I'll revert to plan B Monday.
Btw...its still very slow here. When its full-on rut I can drive around for a few minutes and see deer all over the place: bucks chasing does, bucks using fence rows to get from A to B....nothing today.
Vacation #3 starts Monday, I plan to hit it hard every day next week.

Best of luck to all of you, whether it be gun or bow.

Joining the brisket shot discussion. Years ago my Uncle shot a nice buck first day of rifle season. While we were skinning him, found a three blade broadhead in his brisket which had healed, and body had growed over the broadhead. Deer are amazingly strong creatures that adapt and overcome. This weekend is Pa's one Sunday hunt in archery and the weather is looking great. Six point five hours to go and I'm out!
