The house where Amanda lives was built in 1958 and had oil forced air heat but no central air. The landlady bought it in about 1988, and A/C installed shortly after moving in. That A/C unit lasted until a year or two ago and and was replaced with a shiny new Trane XR14 air-conditioner. The indoor coil is a Trane, and the oil furnace is newer, but not a Trane...

 

The house next door was also built in the 1950s and has a 1980s York Stellar that looks about ready to fall apart...

Some of you may remember that my Della portable A/C started producing obscene amounts of condensation a month or so ago. At one point, while trying to drain it, the bastard leaked noxious water on my bedroom carpet. This resulted in a foul smell that persisted until I finally got fed up and dumped Clorox on the carpet...

Anyway, the Della still worked up until this morning, at least in the sense that it blew cold air. The problem was that it produced a lot of condensation as mentioned above, to the point that it would automatically shut off and not turn back on until it was emptied. It could fill up completely in less than a day, and after the spill incident, I started rolling it to my bathroom and emptying in the bathtub. This became very old very fast, and my dad bribed me to get rid of it by buying me a new window unit.

This was about a $500 unit when new, purchased new in 2020 by friends, who gave it to me in 2021 when they moved to Florida (and rented an apartment with central air).

After talking it over with my dad, we decided that the best course of action was to scrap the unit. After taking the plastic outer shell off, I found a lot of previously corrosion on the condenser that I believe has something to do with condensation issue; I will be taking the Della to the scrapyard tomorrow...

I even commented on “how cold” he had it set….

I never used the Della in heat mode, but it turns out that it was in fact a heat pump...

I got an old LG air-conditioner from @Stitchgirl90's landlady yesterday. The thing worked but apparently would throw off sparks at random times...

Like a lot of new homes being built in my area (especially townhomes), The Reserve at Chalfont features a single air-conditioner and furnace with a electronic damping system and a thermostat on each leave; I have been living in houses with two separate systems since 2007, and I am not entirely sure I guest the 1-unit/multi-zone set up. The A/C unit at the Jordan is 3 nominal tons, or 36,000 BTUs...
