Mid America Pet Food Expands Voluntary Recall to Include Additional Dog and Cat Food Products Due to Possible Salmonella Health Risk

Mid America Pet Food, Mount Pleasant, Texas, is expanding its October 30, 2023, voluntary recall to include additional pet food products, with Best By Dates before 10/31/24, made at its Mount Pleasant facility, due to the products’ potential to be contaminated with Salmonella. Salmonella can affect animals eating the products, and there is risk to humans from handling contaminated pet products, especially if they have not thoroughly washed their hands after having contact with the products or any surfaces exposed to these products.

Healthy people infected with Salmonella should monitor themselves for some or all of the following symptoms: nausea, vomiting, diarrhea or bloody diarrhea, abdominal cramping and fever. Rarely, Salmonella can result in more serious ailments, including arterial infections, endocarditis, arthritis, muscle pain, eye irritation, and urinary tract symptoms. Consumers exhibiting these signs after having contact with this product should contact their healthcare providers. Children, the elderly, and individuals with compromised immune systems may be at greater risk of Salmonella infection.

Pets with Salmonella infections may be lethargic and have diarrhea or bloody diarrhea, fever, and vomiting. Some pets will have may only exhibit decreased appetite, fever, and abdominal pain. Infected but otherwise healthy pets can be carriers and infect other animals or humans. If your pet has consumed the recalled product and has these symptoms, please contact your veterinarian.

Voluntarily recalled brands produced at the Mount Pleasant facility include: Victor Super Premium Dog Foods, Wayne Feeds Dog Food, Eagle Mountain Pet Food, and some Member’s Mark varieties with Best By Dates before 10/31/24. Recalled products were distributed to distributors and retailers throughout the United States. The affected products include:

Took my girl Remi (8 year old Vizsla) for a run this morning. Then she crashed on the drive home in the LC (RHD, no she’s not in the driver seat lol).

 

What a beautiful pup! Love the Vizsla! That’s going to be my next pup. My labs have been great but ready to move to Vizsla.

 

Thank you all for your support and thoughts over what have been some of the worst of days in recent memory. You're a terrific bunch of people. Thank you.

Brings a small smile to my face to see another V; I can't even yet think about "replacing" my departed Aoife yet - but just to be reminded of their zoom-zoom-snooze....very good memories. Thanks!

 

Fen’s other cousin is visiting today.
Fen is sleeping, Stella(German Shorthair Pointer) is on alert for….. squirrels & lizards I guess.



She’s a little high strung for my taste(says the guy with a herding breed), but she is one of the sweetest dogs.

 

Luna’s new coat. She won’t let me take it off. Haha at least I can get her to go out to potty now.

 

The wife got the dog a new sweater.

When my dogs were shedding badly, I used to open up the doors and bring into the house my electric weed blower. You'd be amazed how much hair and dust bunnies are hiding under the furniture.
Works great on Refrigerator coils too!

 

Good reason to go electric. Not so sure gasoline would be a good choice

 

I've done the leaf blower thing with the Shibas, but a lot of it just gets blown in the air. Must be followed with a good dusting and vacuuming. When I get home from a camping trip, I open all the doors of the truck and use the leaf blower to clear out the dog fur.

On another note, I woke up to blood spatters on the kitchen floor this morning. No trail in, no trail out, no dead animal to be found. The dogs were not very interested in the mess, and no signs of blood on them. Odd. So, I cleaned it up, went to work thinking maybe someone spilled some jelly? Came home from work and within a few minutes a ruckus began in the bedroom, muffled barking and a low growl coming from under the bed. Sometimes the dogs play chase and Yuuki hides under the bed, and it's part of her zoomie route when I get home. But Kojun was standing behind me, so what was growling? Odd again. I take a closer look, and Yuuki has a possum cornered.

Best I can figure is that she dragged it in through the doggy door in the middle of the night and lost interest when it played dead. So, she went to sleep in the living room, and it snuck into the bedroom when the coast was clear and hid under the bed all day. She found it again when she was doing her zoomies.

Some people claim that possums are docile and just show their teeth but won't bite. I'm here to tell you, that is completely untrue. That thing tried to bite me multiple times, hard, until I got ahold of it. At that point it went into possum mode and was easy to relocate to the woods. Luckily I had heavy gloves on. The dead raccoon she brought in and tossed in the air like one of her toys was a much easier recovery.

Here is said possum, still playing dead but giving me the stink eye. I think it will survive.

 

Oh man I feel you there, Dex claimed at least 3 possums that I know of this year in our backyard. 2 were babies last spring that unfortunately died when he clamped down on them, this big one though was just playing dead after I made him drop it. Came back outside a few minutes later and it had waddled off.

Possums are good for the habitat though so I try to dissuade Dex from killing them, they're naturally immune to rabies and help get rid of ticks and other more annoying pests in the area

But he has a very high prey drive and they are very slow moving, easy targets so...
