How long for rust that is trapped underneath a rubberized undercoat to do serious frame damage? Any guesses

Had a 2006 Ford Ranger that was undercoated from the dealer. After 10 winters the coating on frame was peeling……and today is completely gone. Truck is still on the road, but isn’t pretty.

I have seen Chevy trucks destroyed after 5-6 years from it. Others can take at least twice as long. May depend how much rust there was when it was done. Two ways to look at it, sell it now and get into a different truck or keep it and when you notice the coating getting loose try scraping stuff off and cleaning it up. They have made repair pieces for older Tacos/4runners that can be welded on the frame to fix it and probably will/do for 3rd gens. Having gone through it with an older 4runner I would sell and buy a different one from down South. It may cost you a little money, but piece of mind is huge. Just curious who did the undercoating and are you sure it is rubberized or is it more like a firm tar like undercoating?

Undercoat was done by Toyota, not sure how to tell if it’s tar or rubber. you can dig ur nail into it if you tried. They said it will never need to re applied. The truck is 5 years old with 50km. Will probably drive for 5 years or until I notice peeling or if it seems it’s decaying underneath the undercoat. It’s very smooth and not bumpy so I don’t think there was too much before hand.

If it was applied when brand new, then great. If they covered rust,,, then not so good.

its super simple and it is probably not rubber. Just take sand paper it in small area and you will see its paint.. Because it will scratch right away.

if it is basically smooth and you can put your fingernail in it and scrape it then it isn't rubberized and much better. I don't think I would worry about it honestly.

Never too late to have yearly rustproofing done. They will hopefully get in all the cracks underneath that crap factory undercoat.

*** Not only do they do the frame, they do the whole truck, fenders, hood, doors, rocker panels, etc.....

    Krown Rustproofing for the win.
