This is how it looked when I got it. It was abandoned in an upstairs of a building in Detroit that I used to make deliveries at.

And the main reason I mention the metal lathe here is that sometimes metal work and wood work cross paths. It's a good thing to be able to do both. Like the dowel center transfers I made, a tool for the wood shop, largest transfers I could find where 1/2" So I was able to make the 3/4" I needed for my project. All it cost me was time, I already had the material. Another example is I also do wood turning, I made all my carbide insert tools. And I've made a few tool rest for the wood lathe as well. So you see metal working and wood working often do go together.

Beautiful lathe. I love old machinery as well.

How long did it take you to restore it? I sometimes think about tackling a project like that.

Here's some metal work that I've done for the wood shop.
A pallet breaker used to salvage wood.

Some stainless tool rest I made for a friend.

Tool rest for another friend's mini lathe.

    My tool rest.

All the turning tools on the left I made. The 3 on the right are store bought.

So yup, metal work does cross over into wood work.

Kinda hard to nail down a real time. A lot of it was spent trying to find parts. And right in the middle of it I ruptured my bicep and that put me out of commission for a couple of months.
But I would definitely say if you find an old machine do it, it's very rewarding when it's completed.

Yup, Benjamin's best. I rarely use them anymore since I made my carbide insert tools. No sharpening either, just go to work.

A few years ago my wife and I were looking for a new place to live and going through the "check out this house" fun. One house was on the eclectic side just a bit. It had a turret in the roof with an 8' x 8' sitting area to see out over the property. The whole house was a hodgepodge of walls and rooms. Nothing really made too much sense. And in the basement was a metal lathe. It was huge! It was easily 12 feet in length. I could not fathom how someone ever was able to move it into the space and I can't imagine how someone would get it out. The house was not for us for many different reasons, although it did have a very nice rustic barn that would have been great for a barn wedding business. But I did entertain a few thoughts about how we could make the property work, assuming the lathe came with the house!

Here’s a bed I made for my daughter about 25 years ago, it’s been in storage and we’re finally setting it up again. Nothing fancy just sugar pine, it’s fun looking at things I built years ago, actually brings back some good memories

You get them out the same way you get them in, in pieces, lol. I moved the column for a vertical milling machine into my basement by myself. How you might ask?

Here’s another piece I made for my daughter about the same time period of about 25 years ago, used pine again, I’m not sure what style, I guess I was just being creative, definitely some of my earliest turning on the legs

Who cares if it's pine, that's a great looking piece! The leg turnings are nice too.

looks really nice! Only negative id say is pine is soft and dents/scratches easy.

Made some progress on my walnut bed frame today. Used Dominos to give the joint its strength and pocket screws to apply clamping force since I don't have clamps big enough at the moment.
Attached the frame hardware. Used something so I can easily disassemble when I need to move.
Just gotta apply finish now. Rubio monocoat is my go to these days.

Man I love walnut, especially the way it comes alive when the finish is applied.
