    I'm 56. I would love to be looking forward to retirement in the next 5 - 8 years, but life has not been kind to me. During my first two rounds of umeployment in the early 2010's, I had to burn through my 401(k) in order to keep the mortgage paid and feed my wife and I. I eventually lost my house to foreclosure after 19 years of paying the mortgage when I was no longer able to pay the mortgage and the housing market at the time was in the tank for my area of CA, and I couldn't sell it. So when my wife and I bought our present home in late 2022, I started with $0 down. I know I won't be able to keep working a top paying job until I'm 86, but will work for as long as I can.

    I feel your pain. I have been fortunate enough to never been unemployed, I have lived in SoCal all my life and couldn't afford to buy my first home until I was around 40. I still have a sizeable mortgage that eats a large chunk of my monthly income. Now that my son is in college ($50k annually) I am pulling $$$ from my 401k to make ends meet. I hope to stay employed for many more years (probably until I die)... :eek:

    Having said that... I don't hate my job and actually enjoy the people I work with... :D
