We've been very lucky; we bought a cheap house a year after we got married and we've never moved, and we were just poor enough for our kid to qualify for 'free' tuition at college, we just had to pay for his room and food. But the cost of the room was freakin .
Actually, we only paid for part of that, some of it is on a student loan. His student loans keeps getting postponed, he hasn't had to pay a dime yet.

 

I’ve had to pay for my wife’s car, my daughter’s truck, her college, the mortgage, my daughter’s wedding, help my daughter and my son-in-law with their mortgage…

It’s no wonder I drive a base model and I’m going to die at work.

 

I'm a CA native myself. Born in Los Angeles, but lived up north near Lake Tahoe for most of the last 30 years, except for 3 years in New York while I was trying to re-educate myself. We moved to KY in August 2022. Our place in Placerville that we sold last year, we had only been in for 3 years, so had no equity built up. If it wasn't for VA loans, I would never have been able to buy a house, as I have never had enough for a traditional loan down payment. Of course the downside to the VA loan with no down, is that you start out with negative equity...... worst case, if I can't find a job very soon and we have to sell this place, we may very well not be able to sell it. But we will cross that bridge when we have to. I have applied to the lender for a hardship deferral on payments, they are processing the application right now.

 

Definitely smells in hear.

My cousin died at work. He worked at the local brewery for over 20 years. Then one day he fell into a vat and drowned. His wife wasn’t even able to collect insurance. Witnesses swore he got out twice to piss.
