Did 4.88 33”tires 3 “ lift and very happy with the setup.
You will hear from those 5.29’s. Unless you have 35” tires or significant weight go 4.88’s.

Were you expecting to get better gas mileage? Yes, you will get shit mileage after lifting and putting bigger, heavier tires on the truck. Say goodbye to 6th gear. Gearing will give you 6th gear back but at the end of the day, you still have to turn the larger tires and you still have to push just as much air.

Well 5.29 will give you torque but even less MPG. 4.88 will be less torque than 5.29 but little more than you have now and about the same MPG.

    1-2 MPG lower

Also to consider, did you put 6" lift blocks or springs to lift the rear? If blocks, towing a camper with 5.29 gears will cause the rear end to wrap and ultimately break springs.

they are 4 1/2 blocks now
gonna put in 3 1/2 lifted springs and 1 1/2 blocks soon

when the camping trailer comes? probably gonna pay the 1,100 and get alcan springs to make a custom 5" spring

sounds like you are saying it is because the lift blocks sitting on a oem weighted spring is why?

No, it has to do with moment. The blocks put a lot of moment on the springs by acting as a lever. No matter what springs you put on, if you have 4.5" blocks you will have problems sooner than later...especially if you regear as well.

    yes makes sense then
going with a lifted spring with a smaller lift blocks has more advantage of life span as well

No block would be best...one of the many downfalls of lifting more than 3". But a 8 or 9 leaf stack on a small block would be much better than you have now.

so 4.88 on 285/75's slightly higher mpg and some higher torque then now
5.29 worse mpg's lots of torque

    however

4.88 will the gear hunting be done with? will it go up hills just fine without lag?

    all opinions guys!

Nothing will be better MPG...that ship sailed already. But 4.88 will give you a little more torque and will find 6th gear again. You will always be gear hunting and hills will always suck. 5.29 will be worse MPG but off the line you will get up to speed much faster than now. Still will hunt for gears a bit when going up hills.
