Any woodworkers?

Yeah, it's my favorite looking wood. Best part is that I'd never actually buy a walnut bed for myself, cuz it would cost so much, but now I got one. Two nightstands up next!

 

forgot how much a hate working with PT wood -- bleah. on a positive note, i got a cheapo little battery-powered chainsaw from Amazon, and i'll be damned if it ain't bad!

 

Applied and buffed the Rubio. I'm pretty happy with how it turned out.

Thank you, I couldn't decide if I wanted to go shaker style or mid-century modern...maybe I got it somewhere in the middle, lol. I like simple and clean...this definitely hit mark.

 

Nice work on the frame. My eye does not see out-of-square (human eyes can ... they just can!) and looks solid with the buried screw paths ... maybe someday I will buy that kit that makes those holes.

If you want an idea for the nightstands with (I think at least) cool flip-down end panels for books/glasses at night ... DM me. Nice think thinner spindle legs with crossover supports at base.

 

Well I had a short 8.5 hour day at work so I came home and went right down to the shop. Ran all the sides of the sections across the jointer to true everything up.
Did some layout and markerd the top sections for drilling the dowel holes and center punched the marks.

Set the drill guide up with a cordless drill.

Outfeed table comes in handy as an auxiliary bench.

Drilled ther holes, drill guide worked great to keep me straight. Surprisingly the holes came out really smooth using the spade bit. And it drilled them really fast.
Next I inserted the dowel transfers I made.Then I clamped the sections together so the transfers would leave their mark.
And then I pulled them apart.
Here you can see the transfers.



And the mark the transfers left.

 

Next I cut the 3/4" oak dowels to 5 3/4" long to fit the 6" holes. This will leave a little room for expansion. I then chamfered the ends.
Dowels are not really round so they don't fit in the holes easy.

So I chucked the dowels up in the lathe and sanded them quickly with 80 grit cloth backed paper.

I test fit all the dowels for a loose but snug fit. These will not be glued. They are just to hold the top together as one solid unit but still allow me to take it apart if I ever have to move it. I would not want to even try to move this top as one piece.
It worked perfectly, very slight ridge between the two sections that will be removed easily when I final sand the top.

Now to do the next 5 holes for the last section to be joined.

Wood people, I'm curious if there are other materials out there that people enjoy combining with wood to make stuff. I know metal and epoxy are big right now. Are there other materials? Do you use any?

Wood, epoxy, and LED lights are a lovely trio! I've tried playing with plexiglass in a project before too. Made a headset stand out of some hobby oak sticks, plexi, and LED's. I'll try to find a pic.

 

Not at all. I love it when people explain what they do and show photos so I can understand.
It's helpful for us beginners.
