I just found out my new truck with 5k on it has a pinhole coolant leak in the head. Has anyone else heard of these kind of issues or problems lately. I've owned toyota for over 15 years and never had any issues, I'm shocked at this discovery and repair needed. I'm worried that the truck isn't going to be the same after they fix it, am I worrying too much? I want to haul with it at some point now I'm afraid too. Ugh I'm very frustrated!

Great, it happened now instead of years down the road.
    It’s mechanical.
    Things break.
Of course it’s not going to be the same.
    IT WON’T BE LEAKING.

PLUS, You have plenty of time left on warranty for anything else to get repaired.
Even if it’s related to this.

Truck ain’t going anywhere like it is..

They recommended to replace head, it's going to dealer tomorrow for repair.

So did you have any drivability issues ? Or external coolant leaks ? Or no symptoms and they just told you this

The truck went in for its first 5k service and some one found this leak, I had no clue there was any kind of leak, I had no driving issues or smells or puddles.

It would benefit you greatly to provide as much info as possible.. What were the symptoms? How and where was it diagnosed? What was the quote?

Unless you are simply looking for an answer to your question, "Has anyone else heard of these kind of issues or problems lately" in which case I'll say 'no, not really'

Slow time in the shop and they are looking to bill warranty work?

This is quite odd... Usually there is a concern first before they can find a "pinhole leak"...

You listed no symptoms... is there another dealer in town ? And is there something they can show you?

This is quite unlikely. Dealers are held to a very high standard when billing warranty work. Exceptional dealers can be pre-authorized to approve warranty repairs. Less than great dealers must request approval. No dealer wants to jeopardize their standing with TMS when it comes to performing any work covered by the manufacturer warranty.

Not terribly odd. I had a 22R that shot coolant in a stream out of the head just above an exhaust port. The coolant jacket was porous externally. These things are never perfect, especially when made in such huge quantities.

Per the OP there was no external leak that he noticed and no running issues. So something is not adding up... of course OP could have missed something the dealer tech found. But also this type of problem is kind of rare. I can't think of any I remember in the few years here...

They told me it was at a casting flash point on the head that's why it had a pinhole leak. Could just be a bad casting but I don't see why the dealer would want to do all this work if it wasn't for sure leaking.

The tech prob found some pink residue from the coolant and deemed there is a leak. Nothing needs to really add up here. Tech found a leak and Toyota is going to fix it. What else do you want?

Did they notice the coolant reservoir low or something?

Curious because mine was full when I bought the truck in May '22, and was low by about September '23. Not sure if that's normal consumption or not but assumed so. If I had a "pin hole" leak as well, I could see consumption being pretty slow.

I will find out tomorrow what they actually found I'm going to have tech show me and I'm going to ask plenty of questions like how did they find it. The coolant reservoir could have been low flagging a potential issue but again not sure how they found it.
