I said I think, not that it is a fact. I thought it was a combination of an electric solenoid and a vacuum line.

 

J shift case is 100% mechanical. It has a few sensors that let the computer know it's position. The ADD actuators in the early years were vacuum actuated but the later years all electric. They have a vent breather that could be confused as a vacuum line.

 

It is not as simple as it sounds. My friend Dan just did this on his Tacoma.

You will want a case from the same transmission as what it's coming off of. I do know that the input spline counts can differ.

 

Not quite as simple as just swapping the case over, unfortunately. And it's all electric, unless you have a really old model (I believe 97 and earlier Tacomas have vacuum shifted ADD, not sure about 4runners).

The spline counts are all the same for the same engine type (i.e. the A340f or R150 transmissions, not the 3RZ with whatever transmissions those have), you can put either transfer case type behind either a manual or auto transmission for the V6. The input shaft is slightly different length, but I had no problems when I wheeled with a push button case behind my 5 speed swap.

The real issue is the electronics - the j-shift system is completely different than the push button. The push button uses a 4wd ECU (under the radio, big green box) to send and receive signal from the t-case actuator that it has shifted, then sends power to the front diff to shift the ADD. The j-shift has a much simpler system that uses a relay as a switch to shift the ADD once it sees that the t-case has shifted to 4wd. So you can swap from push button to j-shift fairly easily, but going the other way would be a nightmare.

You can basically unpin or cut the wires from the green 4wd ECU, and about half of them need to be pinned into the new connector for the relay. The relay is called the Transmission Control Relay, no idea why since it doesn't have anything to do with the transmission. The part number is 89531-35050.

I have the wiring diagrams for both, as well as a map of what wires need to be spliced to the new relay. Let me know if you want all that info.

 

I have a buddy that blew up his front diff and smoked his tcase on a 02 and he was considering trying a j-shift swap because he’s had problems with it before. But I think he’s just going to stay with the button shift. If there’s anybody that would know the know I figured I could reach them here or the Wyoming thread.

 

Can the wires from the push button be tied together so it's just waiting to see a position sensor change states? I would think the system could easily be fooled to think it's functioning normally.

 

Possibly, but I don’t think it would be as simple as splicing some wires together. The 4wd ECU is looking for a certain signal back from the t-case actuator to know that it successfully shifted, that sounds to me like you’d need to wire in a resistor to fool it. I’m shit at wiring though, so who knows.

At the end of the day it wasn’t terribly hard to swap the relay in, since all the wires you need are already in place, just a bit of work to trace the wiring diagrams and map it all out.

I drove by the other night, seems insane. I give it 6 months for the novelty to wear off. In and out has great burgers and shit fries, but there's plenty of places in the valley that do great burgers and fries. So what's the appeal?

 

With ya there. But it may always be packed, lots of them in the phoenix metro and they were all always swamped when I lived there. I liked a 4x4 but I always skipped the fries cause anyway you order them they're awful.

 

I’m hoping they keep the line contained in the parking lot… because once those 200 some extra employees leave isn’t going to be a mess getting through the south side of the village.

 

Took advantage of the nice day and gave my truck a rinseless wash. Almost a year of ownership and its got over 13k miles

 

I have a feeling they have a pretty good method for opening stores and once their travel team leaves the place will be ready for the hustle and bustle. Curious how long it's this crazy though. But even noticed the traffic east of the village on Fairview was packed. Figure between that and holiday shopping maybe? Since I moved to Nampa, I have a lot less traffic near my house which is nice.

I think I might of froze all my nerve endings last month steelhead fishing on the clearwater for 8+ hours in below freezing temps. Cause today felt warm, LOL.

 

Ok now you're just bragging. How was the fishing? Love that area, although I prefer further up into the Lochsa.

 

We went over Thanksgiving, fished Thur-Sat. It was my first time steelhead fishing and I got 1 everyday. Between 4 of us and 3 days I think we ended up landing 7. I'm completely hooked, I'd do it every weekend if I could.
