just a couple of things tbh
thats a pretty cool fact about working at a dealer. if i didnt want my weekends it would be neat to do something like that so i could always try out different things buuuuut i hate working haha.
ya forward controls just feel awkward to me and heavy not a big fan of em tbh.... adventure bikes are fun but again are also heavy but at least they can do some offroad but again heavy so i kinda stay away (wouldnt turn down a cheap t7 thou lol). dirt is more my style since ive been doing offroad and camping stuff for years so it just kinda mixes in really well for me so that might be why i prefer it so much. i can see that on the 200mile ride being nothing after all the trips you have done haha.

    minor tweaks

I did pretty much the same thing, Got a job at a Yamaha dealership when I was 18, worked there and at a few other Fla dealerships as a mechanic and/or service manager till I was 25 and joined the Navy. Despite eating, breathing and racing motorcycles, the shops back then didn't offer insurance or things like paid vacations and 401Ks. The only bennie was riding everything in sight, bikes and parts at cost. The dealership I worked at sold me a '85 FJ1100 in the crate, $4500. Besides factory assembly I was the only person to ever lay a wrench on that bike and I kept it for 26 years till it went underwater in Hurricane Katrina in '06. It was still pristine but once an engine is submerged in salt water it's toast. I got it running but it was never the same after that so I took the insurance. By then it was a dated air-cooled bike with sub par everything compared to the new bikes but we had allot of history. I got over the need to ride everything with 2 wheels and these days I rarely ride someone elses bike when it's offered.

It's good to be honest with yourself and know exactly what you actually need.

    That bike look really familiar....

Here's mine back in 1987, bought new as a 2 year old leftover.

One of the best bikes I've ever had the pleasure to own. Later pic with a FJ1200 front end.

The FJR1300 is probably one of the most sleeped on bike from a performance perspective. I dont think I have ridden a bike that is more stealthy stupid quick as an FJR.... and my 04 Honda 919 was quiet and dumb quick, but the FJR is on another level if WTF. So insanely smooth, quiet and just disgusting power n torque

That stated I get ya, smaller lighter bikes and more off road oriented. Thats the beauty of motos, SO many different options out there (though.... the rest of the world gets some cool stuff we dont get here *cry*)

I like the FJR and could see myself owning one in the future. I love sport bikes too and that seems to be the perfect choice for a bike that can go long distance in comfort and still does great in the twisties.

Supersports are fun but uncomfortable after a while, which makes sense as they're designed for the track. I like cruisers but mid-controls are a must, I had fun with my Yamaha Bolt but you find it's limits very quickly. So far I think an upright naked sport is my jam. The FZ/MT-09 triple is awesome and the Super Duke is on another level. For pure riding enjoyment I love the light feel and handling of a supermoto, but not ideal for longer distance. ADV bikes are all the rage these days and I see the appeal, but don't know how much off road use it would get. I think I'd rather have a dirt bike and haul it to a good riding spot.

There are still so many bikes I'd like to experience but I really love sport riding. I commute by train during the week, so the bulk of my riding is on the weekends purely for pleasure. What I currently value most in a bike is one that's light, agile, nice power, and comfy enough to spend all day on.

never had to commute by a train that sounds odd and interesting tbh. you live in a larger city to be able to do that?

Bought my super tenere with the mindset of doing really no more off roading than i did on my honda 919 naked bike (which... tbh I found myself off road quite often in spots I probably shouldnt of been on a sport bike haha) - but needless to say 99.5% of the riding will be on paved roads. Like you I have a WR450 that is 100000% better off road than an ADV bike.

The super tenere is so much more enjoyable cruising, long distance, short trips, just as quick in the twisties and more comfortable than my 919 (which had racetech and ohlins suspension) . ADV bikes are so hot because you dont give up much performance over a naked sport bike / sport bike in the real world, but you have the upright easy on the body riding position of a dirtbike, shielding from the wind, more suspension travel to deal with real world roads etc etc.

I dont regret buying an ADV bike and getting rid of my naked sport bike what so ever... hell Im actually at the point of seriously considering selling my Grom because I simply choose to ride the big ass Super Tenere way more than it even for trips right up the street to the market.

I also am a slut when it comes to 2 wheeled vehicles, i just wanna ride em all.

My dream bike now is the 890 Adventure R with a 17” street wheel and tire setup. That would be perfect for me. I could keep the stock wheels and tires if I ever wanted to go off road as well, while having the high ground clearance and comfortable riding position at all times.

All my rigs are purpose built. From crawling to camping. I also enjoy a nice stock truck for what that’s worth. Toyota’s are the jam!
Yamaha Motor strives to realize peoples' dreams with ingenuity and passion, and to always be a company people look to for the next exciting product or concept that provides exceptional value and deep satisfaction.

Pretty much sums it up. Japanese in search of perfection. You get a lot of bang for you buck with a Yamaha. The will last the test of time.

My buddies still have the Yamahas I have sold them long ago. Keep fresh fluids, battery and good tires. They just keep going.

Lol, that’s my current go to. They are not without their quirks, but man I can rip down whatever surface I want to. Suspension and motor are fantastic; and leaves huge grin on your face. The gas tank being so low distributes the weight in way that makes it feel like my dirtbike.

    They are super fun!!!

I sold my 1190r to get this, and I am very stoked. I do things on this bike with ease that one shouldn’t :)

Yeah for me the train is very convenient - I live in the suburbs about 14 miles outside of Philadelphia. There's a station in my neighborhood I can walk to then it's a 25 min trip into the city. I could ride instead but don't want to deal with traffic then worry about my bike parked out in the street all day.

Good points there... I do love the extra suspension travel on my 701 so I've gotten a little taste of the benefits of a dual sport. Wind protection is another thing most of my bikes have lacked, and that gets fatiguing on long highway stints.

I'm definitely not opposed to an ADV and will likely own one at some point. Did you notice the weight difference with the Super Ten compared to the 919? A quick google says it's almost 100 lbs heavier. Also totally agree I want to ride them all!
