All my rigs are purpose built. From crawling to camping. I also enjoy a nice stock truck for what that’s worth. Toyota’s are the jam!
Because Japanese like wonky things. You have seen their anime, their food is crazy looking and good, the whole thing screams Akira.
They did it, for the sake of doing it. Probably someone’s side project and hobby at Yamaha.

It would have been cool in a Terminator or the likes. It may end up being one of those things that was just wayyyyyyyyyyy ahead of it's time :D

Back in the early days one of the things they (magazines) would test was 5th gear roll-ons and compare the big bikes of the period. Yamaha owned that title from the XS11s through the FJ period, don't know what it is now. I remember that bike had so much low rpm torque shifting was optional if you felt lazy. I've not ridden the FJR but I've heard from others it retains that character but in a much more refined package.

    such is life in CA

man don't even get me started...the only sunlight I see over winter is my morning walk with my pup and my ride into work. By the time I'm off at 5pm it's already dark. cue seasonal depression.

    this

    but also this hahah

    I didn’t say you’d like it. I said you’d understand. A subtle difference, a difference nevertheless.

I dropped my Versys 4 times, and I’m average height. I attribute it to user error (first bike) and the high center of gravity.

It concerned me enough that I cancelled the purchase of a brand new bike and bought a used FJR instead. First thing I did was out crash bars on it. Haven’t dropped it yet.

I like the idea of a real ADV bike, but have no real desire to go off-road and I’m concerned I’d drop it.

I feel like California is one of the few places where riding on the street is more fun than the dirt.

I can only speak to southern california, but I would mostly agree. Not to say dirt riding isn't fun...but there's just so many more places we can go that are easy to get to for street riding. and most of our twisties/canyons/backroads are pretty nice to ride.

I would think there's a lot of good open dirt riding up in norcal but can't say for sure. Down here it's mostly flat/open desert, a few shared offroad trails, and some tracks.

Im not sure how the BLM land works up here but at least around the cities you’re not allowed to ride around anywhere you want.

Plus on the street you can lane split and there are so many mountain roads here that are tons of fun.

Yeah down here there really isn't much "open" BLM land unless its just flat desert, so kinda boring. but can be good for going shooting lol.

Most of the land nearby the cities here is privately owned or non BLM designated. national forest, state preserves, etc.

just a couple of things tbh
i mean i watch a lot of anime so i know what you mean on odd haha. to me it looks like some ones idea for a old retired persons bike thingy idk lol

    haha maybe but idk!
i agree with that... its rather annoying living in a state that gets snow and the likes and meaning i cant ride the bike because cold or bad weather but it be what it be!

ya but i also dont ride stuff unless i have an interest and tbh nothing about it grabs my attention. i wouldnt have even rode my buddys goldwing if he didnt jump on my sm and just take off lmao
idk where i fall on height anymore lmao average for my age bracket use to be around 5'8" and im right at it or just a tiny bit under it. but they now claim the average is like 5'10" or somethin? so im below it i guess just like back in high school lmao

my buddy who is slightly taller then me rides his t7 a lot and has no issues minus stops but man its kinda sketchy for me tbh... one pothole i dont see and im tipping over..

I'm 5'6" and a Super Tenere has me on the balls of my feet in my thinnest soled shoes. Sat on it in the most squid stuff i own just to be sure id be ok on it. Easily controllable, especially if I were in my boots.

Height is less meaningful than inseam, though. Seat Height is also not a tell all, because the FJR1300 is a couple inches shorter on height, but it's wide like a couch, so same reach as the much taller Super Tenere. The Tenere 700 had my on my toes, though, so the ST is a better fit for a short rider.

Watch Fortnine's video on it. He has the same question, and an interesting theory on what it's purpose is/was.

I didn't even know about the BLM till I moved out west, of course I'd heard of it but it was just some gov dept I had nothing to do with. Out west it's a different story, lots of BLM land around here and they aren't usually nannys like the USFS can be. We're lucky around here, it's warm enough to ride the desert (BLM) most of the winter and it's nice, not too flat. During the summer we ride the mountains (Nat Forest) up to about 10-12K', it's almost always nice and cool up there (if its not on fire).

After living in some dense urban areas on both coasts I immediately took to the wide open areas with no people that are common to the west. The less people the better.

We are definitely privileged to have as much BLM land as we do. and agreed on less is more when it comes to people for the most part. I could never live in a downtown area...even where i live now is too dense for my liking.
