Why? What are you trying to achieve?

The stock intake is already a a Cold air intake. Just hidden in the wheel well liner.

That photo is just a warm air intake generated by the engine.

Looks flashy, makes noise, doesn't help performance and might hinder. As mentioned, you are now pulling hot air next to the engine and not out of the wheel well. That filter might be easier to pull air through but it's more likely to not filter as well letting more crap in.

    I'd pass.

I got a cheaper intake much like this one (it wasnt name brand) and also put on a muffler and while obviously getting more sound, I did notice about a 1 to 1.5 mpg increase across the board.

IMO the truck is not ever going to be a race car so what's the loss of a couple hp if it looks and sounds the way you like? You'll never be able to tell the difference of a couple lost or gained hp with these engines by adding a "cai" or muffler.

Yeah that’s my thinking. Might as well since I like the sound. Just want to be sure it’s safe and won’t suck anything in. I think it gives the exhaust tone a “cleaner” sound in higher rpm, which I tend to sit at lol

Can you just cut your muffler off? At least that's cheaper..

Air filter is way too exposed against water.

Get one with an enclosed airbox, AFE, AEM, Volant, etc. You still get the increased noise from resonator delete.

This one is nice with dry filter and clear lid for easy inspection:

No, the engine makes different noises and from different places.

If you want more engine noise just do a cowl intake mod. Plenty of intake noise.

    I installed one courtesy of @dpele .

    I don’t notice much of a difference.

I have just a cone intake going to where the stock intake comes in from the wheel well… Driven through pouring rain, hit deep puddles, and take it through an automatic car wash once a week that sprays every which way including the underbody… No issues at all.

I have that with a Flowmaster super 44 and it’s a sound I like. Not super loud but noticeable. I can’t tell a difference at all in power. The throttle response might be better but I genuinely can’t tell haha. Like I said, I gained 1 to 1.5 mpg in all driving circumstances. Its a truck not a race car

Also if you want to do an open cone but you’re worried about water getting sucked in then you can look into buying a hydrophobic sock that goes over the cone. Don’t know how it affects sound, performance, throttle response etc but it’s an option

If you buy it plan on installing traction bars too. :burnrubber::burnrubber::burnrubber:

Joking aside, I installed a K&N “CAI” on my 2002 Tacoma, and the truck I currently drive had one when I bought it. My $0.02, they make the intake/engine noise louder and add zero performance. I actually took it off my current truck and bought an OEM intake from a salvage supplier to get rid of the drone sound the CAI gave to the truck.
But, to each their own. If you want to modify your truck, have at it. Just don’t do it expecting a meaningful impact on performance.
