The DF500 would be the one to get for that type of thing , the DF 700 is more for very large or long tenons like for interior / exterior door construction and can actually be fairly cumbersome for smaller work

Save the extra dough by buying the DF500 and purchase a Domino assortment which gives you a bunch of assorted sized dominoes to get you started but more importantly includes all the cutter sizes for the DF500

Anyone know what CBO means on this on this 1/2" pvc ball valve handle or where I could get a new one? My handle busted when I was winterizing my sprinkler system and box stores don't carry this style.

 

So I cleaned out my water softener brine tank I want to say April. Everything has stayed nice and clean using pellet salt and no issues. I've only been keeping a couple bags in it at a time cause I know the time is coming to an end with this thing, but it still works. Bought a couple bags of salt and put them in last weekend. The salt pellets looked dirty, never seen that before. Too late now as I dumped them in. Well, went to change the time on the control and looked in the brine tank. Well crap...

I did look and found two kinked spots on the drain line. Un-kinked them the best I could and did a forced regen. Still same level. Hooked up my little pump and drained roughly 22 gallons of water in there

Hopefully you all can see how dirty the salt looks.



Everything cleaned out and fresh, clean salt added. I plan on replacing the softener soon, but I don't want to do it exactly this minute.

I also have to re-work the drain setup. They have that plastic tubing run around the basement 30'-40' to the drain, with no trap. Nothing like septic gasses going up in your softener. I'm gonna run a small line overhead and dump it into a proper trap.

 

I was playing with the idea of a mortise and tenon joint, I practiced on some scrap 2x6 pine and it turned out ok. It's either going to be that, or 1/2 dowels and blind screws on the bottom.

 

Drain finished. Still need to order an air gap, nobody seems to carry those locally, but this will work for now.

Nothing like spraying sink and washing machine funk all over your walls with the sawzaw cutting into the copper

While I was down there I decided to remove where the old softener drain went into. It's also where the sump pump was connecting to. Why they had the sump connected to the septic was beyond me. Guess it was easy, but if there's enough water to fill the pit the drain field will already be saturated. Who doesn't love a good septic over-flow?



You can see it was slightly pitched wrong. So we all know what happened next. A pipe full of rancid softener backwash. Luckily I had a bucket to catch most of it. Still had to bleach the floor.

So, not sure what they were doing with the sump pit, but it was full of salt crystals and rust. The sump pump was dated 2019 and already was shot...



Right now I don't have a replacement pump. It hasn't ever turned on in my time of being here, but I can add one and pipe it out easy. Not sure what they were dumping down there or if the salt brine was seeping past the check valve.

 

Insulation is done inside , drywall delivered today , they start boarding tomorrow

We finally got clarity on our deck framing / railing system choices so we're back outside . Tented the deck to complete our pitched deck framing / sheeting in preparation for the torch on membrane

 

Question about the blocking on the outside row. The others are flush with the joists but not these ones. Why?

 

The deck framing is currently level . We will have a pitched top surface by putting tapers at 16" centres perpendicular to the joists coinciding with the layout of the blocking . That all then gets sheeted with 3/4" plywood as a substrate for the torch on membrane. In between each of our structural flush beams , at that outermost narrow joist bay is an internal gutter . Those blocks are decreasing in height to slope the gutter . The closest 2 bays slope toward the camera , the 3 furthest bays slope away from the camera . All the gutters will drain into 3" round downspouts that will attach to the 6x6 posts below and then into a rainwater catchment system

The blocking also resists an overturning moment of the stainless steel cable rail posts that will be attached to the framing later .

 

I’d like some information about the torch down membrane. I’ve seen a few but they’ve always been for non traffic.

 

The torch on membrane is just the waterproofing layer , there is hydropressed porcelain tile going over it on pedestals

We just spent three days (2 hours each day) sanding down our front and back door gates then another 3 hours getting some nice oil based paint on them to stop the usual rust buildup due to living near the ocean.

 

It’s actually a sunrise, added bonus.

Softener did a regen the other morning and I'm happy to report this "repair" worked. Best the water level has ever been, so it has been having drain issues since day 1. Water softener will still need replaced in the very near future.
