The fact that Toyota made some YouTubers remove their videos of the test drives is really creepy to me. It’s just a damn truck.

You, Steve and Thang should ask Toyota if you can review their products. They would love your inability to criticize anything.

I think in this case I am referring to people that don’t abide by the contract they signed. I’m pretty sure there was a clause to not publish anything until 11/28. Publishing for clicks ahead of that is douchebaggery. I’m not surprised people do it. Just another indicator of why I ignore YouTube, ticktock, X, instagram, etc.

Embargo’s notwithstanding, Toyota marketing’s process of managing external opinion has taken it to a new level of weird and artificial.

As an example, there’s a significant amount of commentary here regarding very specific elements of the new truck’s styling that look awkward. Agree or not, there is at least some merit worth discussing. Yet I can’t find a single YouTube creator who was flown to Hawaii or is now on the test drive offer any constructive styling commentary beyond “looks totally awesome”.

Gen4 will be a decent truck like all the previous gen’s; Toyota leaning on a bunch of TRD Jon’s pretending to offer objective opinions just makes them look insecure.

 

I’m pretty sure that the people with YouTube names like TRD Jon and Toyota Jeff will still be allowed to show up at all of their events. They are the fan bois that Toyota wants. They don’t want someone like me or Swollengoat that would actually point out the good and the BAD.

 

You also have to stay in a new current model year Toyota truck or SUV, or you're out.

 

If any of them or you keep violating the NDA that you sign in order to demo the truck then it is only a matter of time before you would get blacklisted. This is the only point I am trying to make. My guess would be that since they showed videos of stuff we have already known and seen since May that they thought they were good. However I am assuming that someone at Toyota went like this and had them take down the videos. But yeah, you have a point...if there are any reviews out there that said this new truck sucks donkey balls then I am sure they won't be invited back either. I think someone said awhile back that all the car reviews out there always love what they are reviewing and can't find any flaws other than not holding enough twinkies in a cubby or no rear vents.

 

This time it seems there's ambiguity where short videos are OK, but longer ones are not.

In the past we've seen plenty of full-length videos on TFL, etc. where they drive the vehicles "but can't tell you how good the ride and handling is" until the embargo expires.

 

It is very weird how not one person has commented on the “dent” side, glossy fender flares or anything criticizing the design at all. It’s all check out these ARB tow hooks, the tailgate button and speaker. Did Toyota give them a script of what to say?

 

Almost as bad as Mercedes inviting YouTubers to the press event, then making them blur out the footage in areas Mercedes still wants to keep secret:
