    Hello,
My 3.4l 5vz in my 2000 limited is ticking/knocking and worries me.

It gradually gets worse as it warms up, and tends to disappear on deceleration.

I’m new to Toyotas and am wondering if anyone else has had a similar instance and what their issue ended up being.

    Here’s a video of it:
    https://youtube.com/shorts/0TW9vV7tAKY?si=LF6r6LifWV0ZJV0v
this is in the warm state

Pan was taken off and bearings were fine, replaced bearings anyway, no shavings/pieces in the oil..

Do you have an automatic transmission? Because this sounds like a bad flexplate.

I'm no expert but maybe lifter tick/slap. My OBS Chevy had that problem and it sounded a lot like that.

that is not a normal noise. I would not even run that engine until you figure out what that banging is.

I wonder if the timing idle or a pulley is loose

Pull the valve covers and check valve lash.

Sure sounds to me like something is loose in the valve train. I can't recall if the lifters are hydraulic or solid. Did the tapping occur all of a sudden and if so, what were you doing when it started?

No lifters really, cam directly actuates the valve, the only adjustment is a shim to take up clearance from cam lobe to valvestem. Maybe it tossed a shim?

I would check the valve clearances, but just a guess. Pop the valve covers off and take a look. You could also take a look at the water pump and tensioner. Luckily, there isn't too much to check on these motors.

Checked valve clearances, all within spec. Idk what’s going on, seems to be louder at the front right of the engine

I’ll take a look at pulleys and idlers soon

if it speeds up but is not directly linear, I'd think about the timing belt tensioner. Any chance it was done with a Chinese cheapo from O Really's?
    If never done..it's time.

Listening again that seriously sounds like a belt tensioner.

Sorry guys, didn’t mean to leave the thread so open.

I’d love to have a solution but I have yet to find anything, but at the same time I honestly have put very little time into it.

Hope you can understand that I’m going through a busy time of life and it’s becoming harder to put time aside for projects, like these.

That being said, I bought this truck as a beater/work vehicle and I’ve driven it basically daily for the last month and the ticking hasn’t gotten any worse nor has it improved.

I’ll update the thread if/when I find it, I haven’t pulled the timing cover off yet.. Thank you all for your input, it could very well be as simple as the belt idler(s)

At this point I would disable/disconnect one coil or fuel injector at a time and see if the noise goes away. If it does it is from the piston down. You have eliminated the lower bearings so that leaves piston pin or piston.

If it still knocks take a long ratchet extension and put it to your ear and put the other end on the head, the block etc and you should be able to isolate the cylinder.
